Women's Golf Moves Into Fifth Place in MIAA Standings With Strong Showing at MIAA Jamboree
WOMEN'S GOLF
KALAMAZOO -- With three 18-hole rounds left to play, the Calvin women's golf team has moved into fifth place in the MIAA standings. The Knights moved past Albion and into fifth place in the overall league standings with a fourth place team score of 372 strokes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo Thursday afternoon at the Milham Park Golf Club. Calvin currently holds a 13-stroke lead over Albion for fifth place and trails fourth place Trine by 35 strokes.
Faced with a course filled with sand traps and slick putting greens, the Knights were still able to place four golfers under 100 led by seniors Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kelli Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 91 that left them tied for 19th place individually on Thursday. Senior Julienne Louters (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were close behind with respective scores of 94 and 96. Senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also had a solid day with a round of 103.
Martyna Mierzwa of Saint Mary's nabbed medalist honors on Thursday with a round of 74. Saint Mary's also took first place as a team with a score of 325 followed by Olivet at 329 and Hope at 348.
Saint Mary's leads the overall standings, holding a stroke lead over Olivet.
The fourth MIAA Jamboree of the year is scheduled to take place on Saturday at the Blackthorne Golf Club with Saint Mary's serving as host. The two-day, 36-hole MIAA Tournament is then slated for October 9 and 10 at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, concluding the MIAA season.
