Women's Soccer Edges Saint Mary's 1-0;
Volleyball Sweeps Saint Mary’s
Men's Golf Ties for Second at Red Poling Classic
WOMEN'S SOCCER
NOTRE DAME, IN -- The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team dodged
torrential rain showers and an upset bid by host Saint Mary’s, defeating the
Belles 1-0 Tuesday afternoon. The only goal of the game came roughly 13 minutes
into the second half as junior Carly Prins headed in a 15-yard shot in the box
after receiving a long chip from teammate Lauren Heyboer. Ranked 23rd in the
most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin is now 9-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in
the MIAA.
Calvin is now alone in first place in the MIAA standings, two points ahead of
Kalamazoo which tied Albion on Tuesday.
Calvin nearly added to its scoring total in the final 10 minutes as freshman
Liz Cancel hit the crossbar with a shot that ducked straight down and was
cleared out while junior Mindy Capisciolto hit the post in the closing
seconds.
Calvin held a 22-2 shots at goal advantage including a 13-1 advantage in the
second half.
Senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) posted one save
and collected her eighth shutout of the year.
The Knights will host Kalamazoo on Saturday in an early-season showdown for
first place in the MIAA standings.

VOLLEYBALL
NOTRE DAME, IN – The 11th-ranked Calvin volleyball team improved to 12-4
overall and to 7-1 in the MIAA with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-21 victory at Saint
Mary’s Tuesday night.
Calvin hit .405 as a team including .500 in set two and .417 in set three. The
Knights were paced by the frontcourt trio of sophomores Rebecca Kamp (Orland
Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS), Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS)
and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with Kamp and
VanderPlas collecting 11 kills apiece while DeHaan had eight kills. VanderPlas
had a sizzling .786 attack percentage while DeHaan hit at a .462 clip.
Senior setter Nora Bruskewitz (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) had 35
assists and five digs while senior Katie Corbett (St.
Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore HS) had 10 digs.
Senior Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) added eight digs and
three service aces.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Albion for a 6:30 p.m.
conference match.

MEN'S GOLF
DEARBORN -- The Calvin men's golf team continued its strong play, tying for
second place at the Red Poling Classic held at the Dearborn TPC of Michigan on
Tuesday afternoon. Calvin tied for second place with Malone College with a team
score of 312 strokes, one stroke behind tournament champion Hope.
Calvin was led by junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian
HS) with a 75, junior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS with
a 76 and senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 79.
Rounding out Calvin's finishers were freshman Dave Sarkipato
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and senior Kyle Harvey (Willard, OH/Willard
HS) with rounds of 82.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree
hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club.
