MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams hosted their own Knight Invitational on Saturday at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Ranked second nationally (NCAA III), the Calvin women took first place with 28 points while the seventh-ranked Calvin men's team took second with 83 points.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 8, Wittenberg 0
SPRINGFIELD, OH -- The Calvin men's soccer team lit up the scoreboard on Saturday on the second and final day of competition at the Wittenberg Invitational, defeating host Wittenberg 8-0 Saturday afternoon. Ranked 25th in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin (5-1-0) roared out to a 7-0 first half lead and then added one more in the opening moments of the second half.
Calvin concluded the tournament with a 2-0 record, outscoring the opposition 11-0 as the Knights also garnered a 3-0 win over Otterbein Friday night.
Junior Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) got the Knights on the board with a pair of goals in the opening 22 minutes. After a goal by freshman Chris Nance (Washington, MI/Warren DeLaSalle HS) in the 23rd minute of play, the Knights struck for three goals in a span of five minutes and then added a seventh goal with just eight seconds left in the first.
Calvin closed out the scoring with a goal 43 seconds into the second half as junior Brad Heethuis (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) scored off a feed from senior Greg Snapper (Madison, WI/Madison East HS).
Freshman Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) scored two goals as did junior Kurt Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA/Trinity Christian HS). Van Sickel now has a team-leading four goals with all four coming this weekend as he also scored twice in Friday's win over Otterbein.
Both of Broekhuizen's goals came off of corner kicks. The goals were the first two of his collegiate career. The goal by Nance was also the first of his collegiate career.
Junior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville HS) also had two assists while Van Sickel, freshman Dan Nederhoed (East Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) and senior Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had one assist each.
Calvin held a 25-0 shots at goal advantage with sophomore Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) and junior Ryan Bratt (Silver Spring, MD/Washington Christian Academy) combining on the shutout in goal.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Alma at 4:00 p.m. in the MIAA opener for both teams at Calvin's Zuidema Field.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Washington (MO). 1, Calvin 0
GRAND RAPIDS -- In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin suffered a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Washington University of St. Louis Saturday afternoon at Calvin's Zuidema Field. Ranked 11th in the most recent Division III Coaches poll, Calvin falls to 6-2 on the year while Washington, ranked 20th in the latest coaches' poll improves to 5-2 on the season.
Calvin outshot Wash U. 7-5 including 5-1 in the first half. The Knights also took four corner kicks in the first half but could not dent the Washington net. Calvin's best chance came midway through the first half when junior Mindy Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) flicked a shot from the top of the box that appeared headed for the top corner of the net but was deflected on a quick stab by Wash U. freshman goalkeeper Clara Jaques. Capisciolto was able to head back a rebound shot but Jaques responded with another quick save.
Wash U. then broke through for the only goal of the game in the 65th minute of play when striker Emma Brown broke free into the Calvin box on a spin dribble, whirled and fired a left-footed shot just over the outstretched hands of Calvin senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS).
Wash U. also stepped up the physical nature of the match as the Bears were whistled for 13 second half fouls to the four of Calvin. In the first half, Calvin was whistled for six fouls to the three of Wash. U.
Jaques finished the match with two saves while Sulzer had one save for Calvin.
The Knights will now break for a week and will returnt to action next Saturday when it travels to nationally-ranked Wheaton (IL) for a 4:00 p.m. (CST) match.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Mount Union 0
Calvin 3, Mount St. Joseph 1
SPRINGFIELD, OH -- After dropping a pair of matches to nationally-ranked opponents on Friday night at the Wittenberg Border Battle, Calvin bounced back to defeat Mount Union 25-22, 25-23, 25-16 and the College of Mount St. Joseph 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-23.
Ranked 10th in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin is now 8-3 on the year after finishing 2-2 at the weekend tournament.
In the win over Mount Union, Calvin received 13 kills and 10 digs from sophomore Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) while freshman Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had nine kills. Senior setter Nora Bruskewitz (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) had 34 assists while seniors Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) and Katie Corbett (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore HS) had 18 and 14 digs respectively. Sophomore Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) also had 16 digs.
Against the College of Mount St. Joseph, Lizzie Kamp tallied 14 kills and four block assists while sophomore Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) had nine kills and eight digs. Sophomore Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had eight kills, two block solos and three block assists while Rebecca Kamp had eight kills, nine digs, four service aces and six block assists. Bruskewitz had 40 assists at setter while Corbett tallied 24 digs in the back row. Sears was credited with 16 digs while Peterson had 12 digs.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Rebecca Kamp and Sears were both named to the all tournament team.
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Adrian for a 6:30 p.m. conference match.
MEN'S GOLF
ADRIAN -- The Calvin men's golf team turned in another solid performance at the third MIAA jamboree of the year and in the process, inched closer to second place in the overall MIAA standings Saturday afternoon at the Lenawee Country Club.
At Saturday's outing hosted by Adrian College, Calvin posted a second place team score of 304 strokes, just two strokes behind Hope. The Knights also finished six strokes ahead of Adrian and now trail the Bulldogs by just three strokes in the overall team standings. The Knights are also just eight strokes back of league-leading Hope.
Calvin had four golfers fire rounds under 80 on Saturday led by senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 74 that was good for fifth place individually. Freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) was close behind with a 75 that was good for a tie for sixth place. Junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next with a 76, good for a tie for eighth place while freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 79 that placed him a tie for 21st place individually. Sophomore Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) rounded out Calvin's finishers with an 87.
Steven Strock of Hope was the tournament medalist with a 71.
Jon Kuiper is currently in second place in the MIAA individual standings with an average of 73.7 strokes per round with Jordan Barber of Adrian leading at 73.3 strokes per round.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it competes at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo College at 1:00 p.m.
