Men's Soccer Stretches Win Streak to Three With Win Over Otterbein;
Volleyball Drops Matches to Pair of Nationally-Ranked Opponents

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Otterbein 0

SPRINGFIELD, OH -- Calvin rolled to its third straight victory with a 3-0 triumph over Otterbein in a first round game of the Wittenberg Invitational Friday night. Ranked 25th in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin (4-1-0) outshot an Otterbein team that tied nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday 22-5.

Calvin led 2-0 at halftime on the strength of first half goals from senior Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Kurt Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA/Trinity Christian HS). Holwerda scored his goal in the 17th minute of play, receiving a cross from senior Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and banging in a shot just inside the left post. The goal would prove to be Holwerda's 10th game-winning goal of his Calvin career. Van Sickel then gave Calvin a 2-0 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half, tapping in a through ball pass from freshman Nick Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).

Van Sickel continued the scoring in the second half, redirecting a pass from freshman Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) into the Otterbein net with 9:27 left in regulation.

Sophomore Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) went the distance in nets for the Knights, picking up one save in earning his third shutout victory of the year.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces host Wittenberg at 4:30 p.m. Wittenberg defeated Albion 2-0 in Friday's other first round game.

VOLLEYBALL

SPRINGFIELD, OH -- Calvin dropped a pair of matches to nationally-ranked opponents on Friday at the Wittenberg Border Battle, bowing to 12th-ranked Wittenberg 25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-11 and then falling to fourth-ranked Ohio Northern 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22.

Ranked 10th nationally, Calvin (6-3) received 13 kills from sophomore Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) in the loss to Wittenberg while sophomore Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) and junior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) had nine kills apiece. VanderPlas also had four blocks assist while sophomore Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two block solos and five block assists. Rebecca Kamp also had one block solo, four block assists, five service aces and nine digs.

Defense was a strength in the loss to Wittenberg as senior Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) had 16 digs, junior setter Carolyn Nelson (Milan/Milan HS) 10 digs and sophomore Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) 11 digs. Nelson also had 35 assists.

In the loss to Ohio Northern, Rebecca Kamp had 17 kills, two service aces, 13 digs, one block solo and seven block assists. Younger sister Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had 13 kills and one block assist. DeHaan chipped in with seven kills and four block assists.

Senior setter Nora Bruskewitz (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) had 42 assists, 18 digs and three block assists. Peterson had 15 digs while Sears had a huge match in the back row with 30 digs.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday morning when it faces Mount Union at 10:00 a.m. The Knights will then face the College of Mount St. Joseph at 2:00 p.m.
