Track and Field Teams Compete at Wheaton Twilight Invitational

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

WHEATON, IL -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Wheaton College Twilight Invitational on Saturday and the men's team placed fourth in a field of seven teams with 96.5 points while the Calvin women's team placed third in a seven team field with 134 points. Perenniel powers Wisconsin-Oshkosh won both team competitions with the Oshkosh men posting a team score of 243 points while the Oshkosh women tallied a total of 155 points, two points ahead of defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan.

Both Calvin teams had outstanding individual performances. On the women's side, junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) won the shot put with a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 46-0. Her throw was just seven inches shy of an automatic qualifying mark. Reasoner also won the discus competition wiht a throw of 134-7. In the hammer throw, senior Ashley Glover (Northview HS) shattered a Calvin record with a toss of 143-2, surpassing the previous mark of 141-10 set by Katie Corner in 2004.

Another field event highlight came from senior Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) who won the triple jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and school record mark of 38-3. The jump was the second school record performance of the year by Bratt in the triple jump as she uncorked a hop-skip-and-jump of 38-1 1/2 during the indoor season in early March.

In the 5,000 meters, senior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) took first place with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 17:27.27 with sophomore teammate Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking second with a time of 17:43.08. Senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) won the 3,000 meter open race with a time of 9:56.59. Junior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL) took second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:17.79, just missing an NCAA III provisional qualifying time in the event. In the 800 meters, Calvin received strong efforts from freshman Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and sophomore Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with Tuuk posting a time of 2:19.68 and Diemer a season-best time of 2:20.42. Freshman Rebecca Hiemstra (Dusseldorf, Germany) also had a strong 800 meters with a time of 2:22.53.

In the 400 meters, junior Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) just missed an NCAA III provisional qualifying time in placing second with a time of 57.79. Sophomore Katie Roelofs (Springfield, VA) also clocked a sub minute quarter with a time of 59.94.

On the men's side, senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) highlighted the night, winning the 5,000 meters with an NCAA III automatic qualifying and school record time of 14:22.56. The time surpassed the previous record of 14:25.51 set by Joel Klooster in 2002. It is also the fastest 5K time in the country this spring. In addition, senior Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL) clocked an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 14:40.89 that was good for third place.

Junior Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI) also had a fantastic performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, winning the race with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 9:11.66.

Calvin also had a number of strong efforts in the throws with sophomore Joel Klingenberg (Hamilton, ON) taking second in the javelin (182-0) and fourth in the discus (145-6). Sophomore Ken Echtinaw (Caledonia HS) was third in the discus (148-8) and shot put (47-11). In the discus, Calvin went 3-4-5 as freshman Aaron Clark (Comstock Park HS) was fifth (141-11). In the shot put, freshman Alex Edwards (Southfield, Mich.) was fifth with a throw of 44-7 1/2. In the javelin, junior Shane Pluger (McBain, Mich.) was fifth (162-8) and junior Tim Buiten (Kent, WA) sixth (162-2).
