Softball Wins Two of Four at Illinois Wesleyan Tournament
SOFTBALL
BLOOMINGTON, IL -- The Calvin softball team completed the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament on a winning note Saturday, defeating Fontbonne 6-2 and Anderson 3-0. The Knights completed the tournament with a 2-2 record after falling to Blackburn 4-2 and to host Illinois Wesleyan 6-1 on Friday.
In the win over Fontbonne, Calvin (4-23) grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning as senior Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) belted an RBI double and senior Britanny Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS) belted a three-run homer.
In the second, sophomore Jaqueline Kirkman (Salem, OH) led off with a double and later scored on a run-scoring single by senior Jenn VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Junior Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) later added an RBI single in the fifth inning to give the Knights an insurance run.
Senior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance to gain the win, striking out two and walking three while scattering seven hits.
In the win over Anderson, Folkerts was superb, spinning a six-hit shutout. Calvin scored a run in the first and added two more in the bottom of the fifth.
Scarbrough accounted for the first run with a run-scoring double in the first. In the fifth, freshman Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) ripped an RBI double and Moriarity followed with a run-scoring single.
Folkerts struck out five and walked only one in the win.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Albion for a 3:30 p.m. conference doubleheader.
