KENTWOOD -- The Calvin softball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Adrian Wednesday afternoon at Gainey Field, falling by scores of 3-2 and 11-3. Wednesday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for April 7 but was rescheduled twice because of weather conditions.
In Wednesday's opener, Calvin (2-21 overall, 0-8 MIAA) fell behind 3-0 as the Bulldogs (29-3 overall, 8-2 MIAA) scored once in the third and twice in the fifth. Calvin fought back with a seventh-inning rally as senior Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) led off with a double into the gap in left-center. Pinch-runner Claire DeWitt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) then scored on a double to left by senior Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS). Moriarity later scored on a ground-out by sophomore Malissa VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) but the Calvin rally was extinguished on a game-ending strikeout by Adrian pitcher Kelly Tomasek (18-0) who struck out 10 batters without a walk.
Calvin finished with four hits against Adrian with Moriarity collecting two. Senior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin, striking out one and walking three.
In game two, Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Junior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) reached base on an error and later scored on a groundout by freshman Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS). Junior Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) later scored on a squeeze bunt by Scarbrough.
Adrian answered with three runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead but the Knights were able to tie the game at three on a long home run to left by Prins in the third inning - the second home run of the spring for Prins.
Adrian put the game out of reach however with two runs in the fourth, four more in the fifth and two in the sixth to gain the mercy-rule win. Adrian finished the game with 14 hits while Calvin had four including two from senior Jenn VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who belted a triple in the fifth.
Folkerts took the loss with DeWitt pitching the sixth inning for the Knights.
Calvin is back in action on Friday and Saturday when it competes at a tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan. The tournament web site can be found on-line at: http://www.iwusports.com/sports/2009/2/20/SB_0220091258.aspx
