ANGOLA, IN -- The Calvin baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader at Trine University Thursday afternoon, winning by scores of 1-0 and 7-2. The Knights are now 13-11 overall and 10-4 in the MIAA standings.

In game one, Junior Ben Sietsema (Northpointe Christian HS) was masterful throughout, striking out 11 Trine batters including three straight in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on second base. Sietsema allowed just five Trine hits to pick up his fifth victory of the year against only one defeat.

Calvin scored its only run of the game on an RBI single by senior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) in the fourth inning that scored senior Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) who led off with a walk and later stole second base. Calvin loaded the bases in the sixth inning with no outs and then again in the seventh inning with one out but failed to score insurance runs each time.

Sietsema (5-1) was up to the task as he tossed his second shutout victory of the year, as he walked just one batter and allowed only two Trine baserunners over the final three innings. Calvin had six hits in the win with freshman Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) collecting two hits for the Knights.

In game two, freshman Zach Thomas (Bradenton, FL) picked up his first collegiate victory, allowing just four hits in five innings of work while allowing just two runs. Thomas (1-0) struck out one and walked none. He was staked to a 3-1 lead on an RBI triple by Cousins and a run-scoring single by sophomore Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS) in the top of the fifth. Trine (6-19, 2-12 MIAA) came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Knights answered with four runs in the top of the seventh with freshman Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) collecting the key blow with a three-run homer. The home run was the first of Berger's collegiate career.

Sophomore Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL/Timothy Christian HS) tossed the final two innings of relief to help preserve the win. Calvin outhit Trine 9-7 in the win with Berger going 4-for-4 at the plate including a double to go with his home run. Sophomore Matt Dodrill (Murfreesboro, TN) also had a double for the Knights.

Calvin and Trine will complete the four-game series against each other on Saturday at Calvin in a doubleheader slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
