Women's Tennis Defeats Kalamazoo - Bergsma Picks Up Win #100;
Softball Swept by Bethel Tuesday Afternoon

GRAND RAPIDS -- The Calvin women's tennis team stretched its win streak to three and in the process handed head coach Jerry Bergsma his 100th collegiate victory at the helm of the Knights. Now in his ninth year as head coach of the Calvin women's tennis team. Bergsma is now 100-61 at the helm of the Knights after a 7-2 victory over Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon insie the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
"I've been very blessed to be part of a great organization with many great players over the years," said Bergsma. "I don't have a racquet in my hand so I can't take caredit for any of those victories. All of the credit goes to the players."
Calvin got off to a fast start against the visiting Hornets on Tuesday, sweeping all three doubles flights. The Knights then quickly clinched the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles with sophomore Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picking up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and junior Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) then followed with a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) later added a 6-3, 6-0 win at No 5 singles.
"This was an important match for us," said Bergsma. "Kalamazoo is very talented and one of the teams to beat in our conference. It was good to see our team get out to a fast start in doubles and then keep up the momentum in singles."
Calvin is now 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA. Calvin is also now 3-0 inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Grand Valley State at 4:00 p.m. at the Gainey Courts.

SOFTBALL
MISHAWAKA, In -- The Calvin softball team dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked Bethel (IN) Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-2 and 8-0. Ranked eighth in the most recent NAIA Top 25 poll, Bethel (37-3) outhit Calvin 10-5 in game one and grabbed an early 3-0 lead.
Calvin clawed back with a run in the fourth and fifth but could not score again. Senior Jen VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Jacqueline Kirkman (Salem, OH) both had doubles for the Knights. Senior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss, striking out three and walking three.
In game two, Bethel scored once in the first, twice in the second, three times in the third and then two more times in the fifth to gain the mercy rule win. Calvin also committed four errors which led to four unearned runs. Freshman Claire DeWitt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Adrian in a conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
