MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Hamline 0
ORLANDO, FL -- The Calvin men's tennis team improved to 5-1 with a 9-0 victory
over Hamline (MN) University Wednesday afternoon. Calvin returns to action
Thursday morning when it faces regionally-ranked Luther College at 10:30 a.m.

SOFTBALL
Calvin 7, St. Catherine 4
Buena Vista 7, Calvin 6
TUCSON, AZ -- Calvin picked up its first victory of the year on Wednesday,
defeating St. Catherine (MN) 7-4. The Knights were then defeated by Buena Vista
College 7-6. In the win over St. Catherine, senior Kristin Folkerts (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) picked up the pitching victory.
In the loss to Buena Vista, Calvin jumped out to a 6-1 lead behind a two-run
homer by freshman Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) and an RBI single by senior
Jenn VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Buena Vista tied the game with
five runs in the bottom of the sixth and then won the game with a run in the
bottom of the seventh.
Jenn VandenAkker, Prins and sophomore Marissa VanRooyen collected two hits
apiece for the Knights with Prins and VanRooyen driving in two runs
apiece.VandenAkker was 3-for-3 at the plate. Junior Mandy Johnson got the
start for the Knights with Folkerts coming on in relief in the fifth.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it faces Taylor University and St.
Olaf in single games.
BASEBALL
Southern Maine 21, Calvin 5
PHOENIX, AZ – A weary Calvin pitching staff was no match for 10th-ranked
Southern Maine as the Knights suffered a 21-5 defeat to dip to 3-6 on the year
and to 3-4 on its spring trip.
Southern Maine rapped out 13 hits in the win while Calvin had nine. Southern
Maine snapped a 4-4 tie with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth and tacked
on nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open.
Senior Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) had two hits for the Knights as did
freshman Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS). Senior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA)
had a double and sophomore Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) a triple for the
Knights.
Sophomore Keith Spoelstra (1-1) took the loss for Calvin.
The Knights return to action on Thursday, facing the University of Chicago in
a single game at noon in the final game of Calvin’s spring trip.
