CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR DEC. 29, 2008 (PART TWO)
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 91, Geneva 65
DEFIANCE, OH -- The Calvin men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid with a convincing 91-65 victory over Geneva College Monday night in a first round game of the Defiance College Purple and Gold Classic.
Calvin will face Rockford College (IL) in the championship game Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Rockford (4-5) defeated host Defiance 95-89 in Monday's other first round game.
Calvin (4-5) shut down Geneva (2-6) with a stifling second half defensive effort, limiting the Golden Tornadoes to just 24 second half points and only 25.8 percent field goal shooting in the second half. Calvin led 49-41 at halftime, allowed Geneva to close to within seven early in the second half and then ripped off a 18-2 run to put the game away.
"I think our defensive intensity in the second half was what stood out tonight," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "Over the last few years, we have not played well in our first game back from Christmas break but tonight we played really well, had good flow on offense and outstanding effort on defense, particularly in the second half."
Calvin placed four players in double digits in scoring led by senior Dustin Smith (Hamilton HS) who had 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go with four assists and two steals. Junior Matt Veltema (Calvin Christian HS) had 12 points off the bench while senior Tim Katt notched his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a reserve role. Senior Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD/Sioux Falls Christian HS) chipped in with 11 points and three assists while senior Tyler Zoerhof (Holland Christian HS) had nine points and five rebounds off the bench. Junior John Mantel (Chelsea HS) also had nine points and three blocked shots.
Calvin received strong bench play throughout the game as its reserves scored 43 points. Calvin shot 51.4 percent overall and held a 39-35 rebounding edge.
