MEN’S BASKETBALL
Carthage 95, Calvin 82

WHEATON, IL – A torrent of three-point field goals allowed Carthage to finish
the CCIW/MIAA Classic with a 2-0 record as the Red Men defeated Calvin 95-82
Saturday afternoon at Wheaton’s King Arena.

One night after connecting on 11 three-pointers in an 89-68 win over Hope,
Carthage (4-1) connected on 19 triples in Saturday’s win over Calvin. Carthage
hit 10 three-pointers in the first half in rolling out to a 55-43 halftime
lead.

Calvin (3-2) was able to cut the deficit down to six points with under 10
minutes to play but the Red Men responded with six unanswered points with
Calvin getting no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Carthage sophomore Steve Djurickovic scored 32 points to lead all scorers while
Sean Fendley had 22 points and Cody Hilton 15 points.

Calvin was led in defeat by John Mantel with 24 points while Caleb Veldhouse
had 19 points and Matt Veltema 15 points.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Aquinas for a 7:30
p.m. contest.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Saint Mary’s 79, Calvin 74

NOTRE DAME, IN – Calvin suffered its first-ever defeat to Saint Mary’s as the
Knights dropped a 79-74 road decision Saturday afternoon.

Saturday’s game marked the 30th meeting between Calvin and Saint Mary’s.
Heading into the contest, the Knights had won the first 29 meetings but the
Belles came out with energy in the first half, building an eight-point lead.
Calvin responded with a 10-3 run over the final four-and-a-half minutes of the
half to tie the game at halftime 37-37.

Calvin (5-2, 1-1 MIAA) then scored the first six points of the second half to
take a 43-37 lead but the Belles () went on a 12-2 run to regain the lead and
never trailed again. Calvin cut the deficit down to three points at 75-72 with
55 seconds remaining but Saint Mary’s came up with a key offensive rebound off
a pair of missed free throws and then used a jumper by Erin Newsom with 26
seconds left to ice the win.

Calvin senior Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Brook Van
Eck (Lowell HS) both had double-doubles in a losing effort for the Knights with
Harris scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while Van Eck had a
career-high 21 points to go with 10 boards.

Saint Mary’s was led by Newsom with 18 points and nine boards with Patsy
Mahoney chipping in with 10.

The Belles were 8-of-12 from three-point range including 4-of-6 in each half.
Calvin also committed 23 turnovers in the contest with Saint Mary’s holding a
40-37 rebounding advantage.

Calvin is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Albion for a 3:00
p.m. contest.
