Second Half Burst Allows Wheaton To Overtake Calvin in CCIW/MIAA Classic
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Wheaton 68, Calvin 56
WHEATON, IL – A strong second half allowed host Wheaton to come back for a
68-56 victory over Calvin on the first night of competition of the CCIW/MIAA
Classic. Ranked fourth nationally, Wheaton used 17 second half points from
senior guard Kent Raymond to overcome a 35-32 halftime deficit.
Wheaton entered Friday’s game having beaten all three of its opponents by at
least 25 points. In the first half however, Calvin had Wheaton back on its
heels as sophomore Danny Rodts had 11 points and junior Matt Veltema 10 points.
Wheaton (5-0) cranked up the defensive pressure in the opening minutes of the
second half however, using a 9-0 run to take a 44-37 lead. The Thunder would
never trail again.
Wheaton was 23-of-27 from the free throw line while Calvin was just 6-of-9 from
the charity stripe.
“Wheaton was very aggressive in the second half,” said Calvin men’s basketball
coach Kevin Vande Streek. “They were able to get to the basket and get to the
free throw line. We were not able to penetrate or get to the basket. That was
the difference in the second half.”
Raymond finished with a game-high 28 points while senior center Andy Wiele had
12 points. Rodts and Veltema led Calvin (3-2) with 13 points apiece.
Calvin will face Carthage on Saturday on the second day of the tournament at
2:00 p.m. (EST).
