Women's Soccer Players Named to All-MIAA Teams;
Erik VanKampen Featured By Trackshark.com;
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Seven members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have received All-MIAA
honors including five individuals who have been named to the All-MIAA first
team.
Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are senior Elizabeth Ribbens,
juniors Kayla Sulzer, Allison Boender, Emily Ottenhoff and sophomore Carly
Prins.
Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are juniors Alyssa Bergsma and
Natalie Veurink.
Calvin’s total of five All-MIAA first team selections matches the highest
single-season total in school history with its 1995 team also achieving the
feat.
Ribbens is making her third appearance on the All-MIAA first team while Prins
has been selected for the second time. Sulzer, Boender and Ottenhoff are first
time selections.
Ribbens is from Tinley Park, Illinois. She is a graduate of Victor J. Andrew
High School. A forward, Ribbens led the MAA in scoring this fall with 20 points
in conference play on the strength of seven goals and six assists.
Ribbens is a third generation varsity athlete at Calvin as her grandfather
Elmer Ribbens was a varsity letterwinner in basketball, baseball and in track
and field between 1946-to-1949. Her father Dave Ribbens was a standout on the
Calvin men’s soccer team in the 1970s and in 1978, was named to the All-MIAA
first team. He also served as a co-captain with Calvin’s current head
women’s soccer coach Mark Recker in 1978. In addition, her mother Deb
Ellard Ribbens was a member of the Calvin field hockey team in 1975.

Like Ribbens, Ottenhoff is from the Chicago area as she hails from Palos
Heights, Illinois. A midfielder, Ottenhoff is a graduate of Chicago Christian
High School, Ottenhoff was fifth in the MIAA in scoring with 12 points. She was
also ranked third in goals with six.
A defender, Boender is from Grandville and is a graduate of Grandville Calvin
Christian High School. During the season, Boender was named MIAA Defensive
Player of the Week once and was part of a Calvin defense that allowed just one
goal in conference play.
A goalkeeper, Sulzer is from St. Charles, Missouri. She is a graduate of
Whitfield High School. During the conference season, Sulzer compiled a
league-leading 0.00 goals-against-average as she did not allow a goal in 315
minutes of play.
A forward, Prins hails from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity
Christian High School. Against conference opponents, Prins had five goals and
four assists this year. Prins was particularly affective in the MIAA Tournament
collecting three goals and two assists including the game-winning goal in the
MIAA Tournament championship game against Alma.
Also a goalkeeper, Bergsma is from Walker and is a graduate of Grandville
Calvin Christian High School. While splitting the goalkeeping duties with
Sulzer this year, Bergsma compiled a league goals-against-average of 0.22 that
ranked second in the league statistics behind Sulzer. Bergsma is receiving
All-MIAA second team honors for the second straight year.
Veurink is from Spring Lake and is a graduate of Muskegon Western Michigan
Christian High School. A midfielder, Veurink finished second in the MIAA in
points (15), third in goals (6) and fourth in assists (3).
Calvin recently captured its fourth consecutive MIAA title by finishing 11-0-0
in league play. Included in the run was a 3-0 record in the MIAA Tournament,
culminated by a 3-0 win over Alma in the MIAA Tournament Championship game.
Calvin has now won seven MIAA titles overall, ranking only behind the eight
titles won by Kalamazoo.
Ranked fourth nationally, Calvin (17-2-1 overall) will host a four-team NCAA
III Tournament regional this Friday and Saturday. The Knights will face the
College of Mount St. Joseph in a first round game on Friday at 11:00 a.m.

cross country for the third straight year and also helped the Knights gain
their 22nd consecutive MIAA title. Ranked fourth nationally, Calvin will
compete at the Great Lakes Regional meet on Saturday at Otterbein College in
Westerville, Ohio.
