Men's Soccer Players Receive All-MIAA Honors - Greg Snapper Named MIAA MVP;
MEN'S SOCCER
Eight members of the Calvin men's soccer team have received All-MIAA honors
headlined by junior sweeper Greg Snapper who has been named the MIAA's Most
Valuable Player.
Snapper is one of five Calvin players named to the All-MIAA first team as
seniors A.J. Dufendach and Darrin Cline along with junior Luke Holtrop and
sophomore Scott Hooker have been so honored. Named to the All-MIAA second team
from Calvin are senior Dan VanSlyke, junior Michael Holwerda and sophomore
Lucas Wilgenburg.
Snapper is the first Calvin player to receive MIAA MVP accolades since Joel
Veldhouse received the award in 2004. It marks the 18th time a Calvin men's
soccer player has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin (Madison West HS), Snapper has been a
three-year starter at the sweeper back position on defense for the Knights.
Snapper helped key a Calvin team that allowed only eight goals in league play
this fall. During the year, he was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week
once. Snapper is also receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the second
straight year.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Forest Hills Northern High School,
Dufendach is receiving All-MIAA first team accolades for the second straight
year. A midfielder, Dufendach was named MIAA Player of the Week once this year
and has contributed two assists this fall while providing valuable support both
on offense and defense.
A native of Grandville and a graduate of Grandville High School, Cline is
making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. A year ago, he was
named to the second team. In conference play, Cline has posted an MIAA-leading
seven shutouts along with a goals-against-average of 0.50 and a saves
percentage of .854.
Holtrop and Hooker are both natives of Hudsonville and graduates of
Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. A midfielder, Holtrop is making his
first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. In conference play, Holtrop had
three goals and one assist. A forward, Hooker is making his second straight
appearance on the All-MIAA first team. He leads the MIAA in points with 18 on
the strength of five goals and an MIAA-leading eight assists.
A midfielder, VanSlyke is from Grove City, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of
Grove City High School. In conference play, VanSlyke had two goals and one
assist including one game-winning goal. A forward, Holwerda is from Grand
Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. He was credited
with three goals, two assists and eight points in league play and was named
MIAA Player of the Week once this fall. An outside back on defense, Wilgenburg
is from Visalia, California. A graduate of Central Valley Christian High
School, Wilgenburg was a key member of Calvin’s defense that allowed only
eight goals in league play. He was also selected as MIAA Defensive Player of
the Week once during the year.
Calvin completed the MIAA season with a 12-1-1 conference record, capturing
the outright MIAA title for the second straight year. Currently ranked 18th
nationally, Calvin (15-4-1) will compete in the NCAA III Tournament on Friday
when it takes on Carnegie-Mellon (14-2-1) in a first round game. Friday’s
game will take place at Ohio Wesleyan University with a start time set for 5:00
p.m. (EST).
