Rebecca Kamp Named MIAA's MVP In Volleyball and MIAA Freshman of the Year; Kelsey Sears Named MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year
VOLLEYBALL
GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin College freshman Rebecca Kamp has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and the MIAA's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Calvin junior Kelsey Sears has been named the MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year.
The awards were part of the All-MIAA team released this evening as Kamp and Sears were both named to the All-MIAA first team while senior Lauren DeGroot and junior Sara Kramer have been named to the All-MIAA second team.
A native of Orland Park, Illinois (Chicago Christian HS), Kamp is the first freshman in Calvin volleyball history to receive the MIAA Most Valuable Player Award. She is also the fourth individual in Calvin volleyball history to receive MIAA Freshman of the Year honors.
A 6-1 middle-hitter, Kamp averaged 4.95 kills-per-set and 1.24 blocks-per-set in conference play along with a hitting percentage of .377. Kamp led the MIAA in kills and blocks while ranking second in hitting percentage. During the conference season, Kamp was a two-time MIAA Player of the Week.
A native of Traverse City and a graduate of Traverse City West High School, Sears averaged an MIAA-leading 5.53 digs-per-set. A libero, Sears earned MIAA Specialty Player of the Week accolades during the season.
Sears is also making her first appearance on the All-MIAA first team.
A native of Tulare, California (Central Valley Christian High School), DeGroot is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the fourth consecutive year. She is receiving the award however for the first time as a setter. DeGroot previously served as Calvin's starting libero but moved into a starting setter's role this fall. In conference play, she averaged 10.25 assists-per-set to rank second in the MIAA in that category. She also ranked 10th in service aces-per-set (0.31). During the season, DeGroot was a two-time MIAA Specialty Player of the Week.
Kramer hails from Dyer, Indiana (Illiana Christian HS). Also a middle-hitter, Kramer was recently named the MIAA's Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Kramer finished the year ranked ninth in the MIAA in hitting percentage (.239).
Ranked 14th in the most recent AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin will participate in the NCAA III Tournament later this week. The Knights (26-4) will open NCAA III Tournament play on Thursday with a first round match against Wisconsin-Whitewater (29-9). The match will be part of an eight-team regional taking place at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
