ANGOLA, IN -- The nationally-ranked Calvin women's soccer team closed out the
round robin portion of its conference schedule on Saturday with a 8-0 win at
Trine University. Ranked fourth nationally, the Knights have gained the top
seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament and will host Saint Mary's in a first
round game next Saturday at noon. While Calvin has already completed its round
robin schedule, six other MIAA schools will complete their round robin
schedules on Wednesday next week.

Calvin led 3-0 at halftime and then used three second half goals from junior
Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) to put the game
away.

Senior Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew HS) also scored
twice for Calvin and in doing so, moved into 11th place on the Calvin career
list for goals (35) and into ninth place in career points (102).

Also scoring for the Knights on Saturday were senior Liz VanRees
(Muskegon/Western Michigan Christian HS) and junior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos
Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS). VanRees added two assists on the afternon

GRAND RAPIDS -- The Knights staved off a late-game push by Kalamazoo and
outlasted the seventh-place Kalamazoo College Hornets at Zuidema Field, picking
up their 11th consecutive victory, winning by a score of 2-1.

Freshmen Tyler Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Miles Colago (Anoka,
Minn./Anoka HS) came off the bench to net goals for first-place Calvin (13-3-0,
10-0-0) - each of whom scored against Kalamazoo when the two teams first met
back on Sept. 30.

“That shows the depth we have in our program,” said Calvin coach Chris
Hughes. “That’s where our first goal came from. It worked out nicely.”

Vegter sparked Calvin’s offense with a strike in the 34th minute,
capitalizing off a deflected shot that was initially uncorked by sophomore Kurt
Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, Penn./Trinity Christian), who was awarded the assist.

The Knights amended their 1-0 lead in the second half as Colago fielded a
corner kick from Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) that weaved through
Kalamazoo’s box, tapping in a weak side goal past Hornet goalkeeper Josh
Wahlstrom.

Trailing 2-0 in the 89th, Kalamazoo converted on a corner kick - the
Hornets’ only opportunity from the corner all game - sent by Dane Carey
with only 1:35 remaining. The goal was given credit to Steve Hagerman.

“Kalamazoo came out to play,” said Hughes. “They battled all 90 minutes.
We knew they were going to be an aggressive team, a fast team, and so we were
expecting it.”

Calvin goalkeeper Darrin Cline (Grandville/Grandville HS) was able to fend off
a pair of late-game through balls sent from the Kalamazoo backfield to solidify
the win for the Knights.

The Knights received more good news following their 10th straight conference
win, as second-place Hope (12-2-2, 8-2-0) fell to Trine (7-9-0, 5-5-0) in a 2-1
battle in Angola, Indiana. Hope’s loss gives Calvin a six-point lead in the
MIAA standings head into next week’s slate of conference games.

Calvin will host fourth-place Olivet (7-8-1, 5-5-0) on Tuesday, Oct. 28 before
trekking to the lakeshore for round two of its rivalry match-up with Hope on
November 1.
