CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 22. 2008

Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten in MIAA Standings With Win vs Olivet;
Women's Cross Country Team Ranked Number-One/Men Ranked Fifth

By Chaz Amidon

The Knights used goals from Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, Penn./Grove City), Scott
Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian), and Justin Ahearne
(Hudsonville/Hudsonville) to cruise past Alma at Zuidema Field on Wednesday,
3-0.

Calvin extended its win streak to 10 games with the victory, preserving its
unblemished MIAA record and remaining in sole possession of first place in the
conference.

VanSlyke opened Calvin’s scoring barrage with a goal in the 7th minute,
toe-punching a line drive past Alma goalkeeper Jon Nowak.

It was VanSlyke’s second goal of the season - his first came in a 5-1 win
over Trinity International back on Sept. 6.

“It felt pretty good,” said VanSlyke. “In the last couple of years I
haven’t gotten a whole lot of chances, so to stick one in there was nice.”

The Knights went nearly 60 minutes without finding the back of the net again
until Hooker, who upped his team-leading goal count to seven, squeaked in a
rebound past Nowak in the 65th minute.

Ahearne tacked on his first collegiate goal in the closing minutes of the
second half, directing a header sent from Lucas Wilgenburg (Visalia,
Calif./Central Valley Christian) to the left side of the Scots’ net.

“The kids are putting in an effort and attempting to control the game, which
is always difficult,” said Calvin coach Chris Hughes. “Putting in three
makes you feel good.”

Calvin outshot Alma 22-7, garnering 11 shots in each half while managing to
place 13 on goal throughout.

Knight goalkeeper Darrin Cline (Grandville/Grandville) recorded his third
consecutive shutout and his eighth overall this season.

In a recent poll released by the NCAA D-III Men’s Soccer Committee, Calvin
is currently ranked No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region - one slot ahead of Hope,
and two ahead of Ohio Northern University. The Knights netted narrow victories
against each of those teams on Oct. 8 and Sept. 20, respectively.

Calvin (12-3-0, 9-0-0) will now host Kalamazoo (5-8-0, 2-6-0) on Saturday,
Oct. 25 before concluding its three-game home stand against Olivet next
Tuesday, Oct. 28.
