Women's Soccer Edges Kenyon on Late Penalty Kick;
Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten in MIAA With Win at Olivet;
Women's Golf Competes at Siena Heights Invitational;
Men's Tennis Players Compete at ITA Central Regional In St. Louis

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Kenyon 0

GAMBIER, OH -- For the third straight meeting, a Calvin-Kenyon matchup was decided by one goal. On Saturday, ninth-ranked Calvin nipped Kenyon 1-0 on a penalty kick by junior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) with just 3:46 left in regulation.

Calvin and Kenyon have now met three straight years with Calvin winning 1-0 in Grand Rapids in 2006 and Kenyon winning 2-1 a year ago in Gambier.

Ottenhoff's goal was her team-leading seventh tally of the year. The penalty kick was awarded when Calvin sophomore Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) was hauled down in the Kenyon penalty box.

Calvin held a 16-8 shots at goal advantage with junior Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian HS) posting five saves to record the shutout victory for the Knights.

Now 7-2-1 on the year, Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts league-leading Alma College at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin's Zuidema Field.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Olivet 1

OLIVET -- Calvin stretched its win streak to five games and improved to 4-0 in MIAA play with a 2-1 victory at Olivet Saturday afternoon. Calvin scored a goal in each half and then held off a late Comet comeback attempt to gain the win.

Calvin is tied with Hope at 4-0 in league play with the two rivals set to play next Wednesday at Calvin at 4:00 p.m.

In its win over Olivet (3-6-1 overall, 1-3-0 MIAA), Calvin took a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Miles Colago (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville HS) off a feed from sophomore Brad Heethuis (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) with just 1:22 left in the first half. The play came on a nifty give-and-go between Colago and Heethuis at the top of the Olivet box.

A goal by freshman Ahmed Gobana (Anoka, MN/Anoka HS) assisted by freshman Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) in the 70th minute of play gave Calvin a 2-0 lead.

Olivet sliced the deficit in half on a goal by Mike May in the 84th minute but could not score again.

Calvin (7-3-0 overall) held a 22-5 shots at goal advantage with senior goalkeeper Darrin Cline (Grandville/Grandville HS) picking up one save for the Knights while Ethan Felsing had 12 saves for the Comets.

WOMEN'S GOLF

ADRIAN - The Calvin women's golf team competed at the Siena Heights Invitational at the Tecumseh Country Club on Saturday and posted a team score of 422 strokes. Calvin was led by junior Emily Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 93. Freshman Kelsey Kolk (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) was next with a 106 while freshman Katy Berghuis (Wyoming/Calvin Christian HS) had a 129.

Calvin was scheduled to return to action on Monday with an invitational against Aquinas but that competition has now been canceled. Calvin will return to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the MIAA Tournament at the Bedford Valley Country club.

MEN'S TENNIS

ST. LOUIS, MO -- Several members of the Calvin men's tennis team had strong showings at the Wilson ITA Central Region Championships held at Washington University of St. Louis.

In singles play, senior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, ON/Zionsville Community), sophomore Matt DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) and senior Marcus Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS both advanced to the Round of 64 with Zeilstra defeating Daniel VerHave of Kenyon 6-3, 6-2; DeVlieger defeating Nick Craig of Knox College 6-0, 6-0 and Rescorla defeating Robert Korsch of Elmhurst 6-0, 6-3. Senior Steve DeMaagd (Grandville/Calin Christian HS) had Calvin's best showing, advancing to the Round of 32 with a with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win over Michael Rardon of DePauw and a 6-1, 6-3 win over Adam Seeley of Denison.

Also competing in singles play for Calvin was sophomore Andrew DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) and freshman David Hillner (College Station, TX/Pebble Creek HS).

In doubles play, the tandem of Zeilstra and DeMaagd advanced to the Round of 16 with a 8-2 win over a team from Monmouth and an 8-2 win over a team from Albion. Andrew and Matt DeVlieger also competed for Calvin in doubles play.
