Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Compete at Notre Dame/Adrian

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

NOTRE DAME, IN -- The top-ranked Calvin women's cross country team came up with a strong performance in the Gold Division of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon, posting a fourth place score of 155 points. Ranked eighth in the latest Division I rankings, Michigan State took first place with 76 points with Grand Valley - ranked second in the most recent Division II national poll - placing second (93 points). Division I Northwestern was third (136).

Calvin was led by junior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in eighth place (17:52). Ayla Mitchell of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh took first place individually with a time of 17:28. Calvin's second finisher was senior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ/St. Michaels HS) with a 17th place time of 18:08. Junior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA/Bellevue Christian HS) was next for the Knights, finishing 30th in 18:22. Other Calvin finishers included senior Jesi Hale (Rehoboth, NM/Gallup HS) in 35th (18:28); sophomore Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 69th (18:54); senior Kelly Edwards in 73rd (18:57); junior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South HS) in 86th (19:04) and junior Mary tolsma (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) in 87th (19:05).

Calvin also sent a group of runners to Adrian College to compete at the Great Lakes Region Short and Long Course Championships. Calvin took first place in the competition which included a combined score of 50 points from the long course (6K) and short course (3K) races. In the short course race, Calvin scored 14 points behind a third place finish by freshman Rebecca Hiemstra (Dusseldorf, Germany/International School of Dusseldorf) who placed third with a time of 11:25. Freshman Eva Kort (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty HS) was next, placing fifth in a time of 11:36. Sophomore Kristen Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia lutheran HS) was close behind in sixth place with a time of 11:37.

In the long course race, Calvin posted a fourth place score of 36 points. Calvin's top finisher ws freshman Sarah Orndorff (Huron, OH/Huron HS) in a 10th place time of 24:35. Other Calvin finishers included freshman Kelly Larsen (Decorah, IA/Decorah HS) in 11th place (24:36) and freshman Anna Pranger (Centennial, CO/Cherry Creek HS)) in 15th place (25:00).

John Carroll finished second in the overall combined standings with 52 points, recording 15 points in the long course race and 37 points in the short course competition.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes at the Michigan Intercollegiates at 3:30 p.m.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

NOTRE DAME, IN -- The second-ranked Calvin men's cross country team ran into a pair of old adversaries on Friday in the Gold Division of the Notre Dame Invitational and finished behind both.

Calvin took fourth with 149 points but finished behind seventh-ranked North Central and fourth-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point. North Central took the competition with 93 points while Stevens Points was third with 125 points. Ranked second in the latest Division II nationa poll, Grand Valley State took second with 104 points.

Calvin senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA/Greenville HS) had a sterling effort for the Knights, placing fourth with a time of 25:00. Christiansen was the top Division III finisher in Friday's race. Dave Weston of the University of Windsor was the meet winner in a time of 24:50. Senior Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) was Calvin's next finisher with a 17th place time of 25:22.

Other Calvin finishers included senior Dan VandenAkker (Grand Rapids/grand Rapids Christian HS) in 36th (25:50); sophomore Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) in 45th (26:03); junior George Visser (Winfield, IL/West Chicago HS) in 47th (26:04); senior David Jaeger (Winfield, IL/St. Francis HS) in 64th (26:18); freshman Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian Hs) in 90th (26:34); senior Nate DeHaan (Byron Center/South Christian HS) in 83rd (26:34) and senior Andrew Stutzman (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown HS) in 98th (26:40).

Calvin also sent a group of runners to Adrian College to compete at the Great Lakes Region Short and Long Course Championships. Calvin took first place in the competition included a combined score of 44 points from the long course (8K) and short course (5K) races.

In the long course race, Calvin took second with a score of 29 points. Calvin's top finisher was junior Sawyer Koops (Doloros, CO/Lexington Christian HS) in seventh (27:00) followed by senior Tim Langenberg (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge HS) in ninth (27:07) and freshman Dan Carreon (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial HS) in 13th (27:41).

In the short course race, Calvin posted a first place score of 15 points. Junior Jared Eliason (Shoreview, MN/Shoreview Concordia Academy) was Calvin's top man in a second place time of 16:10 followed by freshman Rhett Morici (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North HS) in fifth (16:23) and senior Brian Odegaard (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) in eighth (16:29).

Goshen College (IN) took second in the combined team standings with a score of 73 points.

Calvin retuns to action next Friday when it competes at the Michigan Intercollegiates at 3:30 p.m.
