Women's Soccer Picks Up Shutout Victory at Adrian;
Volleyball Holds Off Determined Albion Squad;
Women's Cross Country Team Remains Ranked Number-One - Men Ranked Second

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Adrian 0

ADRIAN -- The ninth-ranked Calvin women's soccer team improved to 6-2-1 overall and to 2-0-0 in MIAA play with a 2-0 victory at Adrian Wednesday afternoon. Calvin has now 21 consecutive MIAA regular season games dating back to the 2005 season.

Calvin got off to a quick start on a goal by junior Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) just 5:17 into the match with sophomore Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin continued to outshot Adrian 10-1 in the opening 45 minutes of play but could not add to its scoring total in the first half. The host Bulldogs (6-3-1 overall, 1-1-0 MIAA) then cranked up the pressure, forcing Calvin's junior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) to make three key saves in the opening 12 minutes of the second half.

Calvin regained the momentum and found the back of the net with 25:34 left in regulation time on a goal by senior Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/) off an assist from Veurink. The goal was the team-leading fifth goal of the year for Ribbens.

Calvin then held Adrian in check the rest of the match to gain its fifth shutout victory of the year.

Calvin held a 12-6 shots at goal advantage with Sulzer and junior Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian HS combining on the shutout in nets for the Knights.

Calvin is now tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Alma. The Knights will host Alma next Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Prior to that match, Calvin will journey down to Kenyon on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match.

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 1 (26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22)

ALBION -- Calvin got back on the winning track and snapped a four-match winning streak by a determined Albion squad Wednesday night at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium, winning by scores of 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22. Ranked 17th in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin is now 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA.

In set one, Calvin held a 24-20 lead but allowed the Britons (11-9 overall, 4-4 MIAA) to rattle off four straight points to tie the score at 24. Calvin was able to come up with the final two points however to gain the key first set win. The Knights then took two of the next three sets to claim the conference win.

Calvin hit .297 as a team in the win including .412 in the opening set. The Knights also had a strong defensive match, collecting 92 digs. Calvin had four players notch double-digits in digs led by junior libero Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) with 22 digs. Junior Katie Corbett (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore HS) was next with 18 digs while senior Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian HS) and freshman Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) had 13 digs apiece.

DeGroot also picked up 54 assists with freshman Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, Il/Chicago Christian HS) racking up 25 kills, four block assists and a hitting percentage of .429. Freshmen Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Northern Michigan Christian HS) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were next with 10 kills apiece. DeHaan had a hitting percentage of .381 along with one block and three block assists. The Knights also received a strong contribution from sophomore Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) with nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage. Senior Jessica Garlick (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also chipped in with one block and five block assists.

Calvin will now break until October 7 when it hosts Trine University at 7:00 p.m. in an MIAA conference match at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM HOLDS ONTO TOP SPOT - MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM PICKS UP ONE FIRST PLACE VOTE

For the second straight week, the Calvin women's cross country team is the number-one ranked team in Division III women's cross country. The Knights are the top-ranked team in this week's poll released earlier this afternoon. Calvin received all eight first place votes in this week's poll. Calvin took first place at the MIAA jamboree this past Friday with a team score of 20 points.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire is the number-two ranked women's team in the latest poll.

On the men's side, Calvin is again ranked number-two but the Knights did pick up one first place vote in this week's poll. Cortland State of New York picked up the remaining seven first place votes to again retain the top spot.

At the MIAA jamboree last Friday, Calvin took first place with a perfect score of 15 points. The Knights took the top 10 spots at the jamboree.

Both cross country teams are back in action on Friday when they compete at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational.
