Men's Golf Ties For Fourth at MIAA Outing At Watermark Country Club;
Lauren DeGroot Named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week for Fifth Time In Career

MEN'S GOLF

CASCADE -- The Calvin men's golf team had one of its top performances of the year on Monday, firing a team score of 312 strokes to finish in a tie for fourth place at an MIAA outing. Calvin served as host of Monday's tournament which was held at the Watermark Country Club. Calvin tied for fourth with Trine University. Olivet took first place on Monday with 307 strokes to widen its overall lead in the MIAA standings. Albion was a close second on Monday at 308 with Hope third at 311.

With one league tournament left to play, Calvin remains in fifth place in the overall team standings. The Knights are 38 strokes ahead of sixth place Adrian and 29 strokes behind fourth place Albion. Olivet is in first place in the overall standings and holds a 27-stroke lead over Hope.

Calvin was led on Monday by sophomores Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 76 which left the teammates tied for eighth place individually. Next for the Knights were junior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Matt Marks (Byron Center/South Christian HS) with rounds of 80 with junior Tyler Smies (Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan Country christian HS) rounding out Calvin's finishers with a round of 83.

Mark McLaughlin of Albion was Monday's medalist with a round of 71. Alma's Jake Baltimore also fired a hole-in-one on the par three (140-yard) second hole.

Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when competes at the Red Poling Classic at the Dearborn TPC. Calvin closes out its MIAA campaign on Thursday, competing at a league tournament hosted by Kalamazoo at the Milham Park Golf Club.

VOLLEYBALL

For the fifth time in her collegiate career, Calvin senior Lauren DeGroot has been named the MIAA's Specialty Player of the Week. A setter from Tulare, California, DeGroot amassed 54 assists (13.5 per set) in a four-set victory over Albion last Wednesday. She was also credited with 13 digs and two blocks in the Calvin win.

Ranked 17th nationally, Calvin (12-4 overall, 6-2 MIAA) is scheduled to return to action Tuesday night when it hosts Alma at 7:00 p.m. at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
