WOMEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Ohio Northern 2
By Chaz Amidon ‘09
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – While heavy afternoon showers stifled the pace of
Saturday’s home bout against Ohio Northern, the Knights were able to overcome
an early deficit and, with under seven minutes remaining, pull ahead off an
Emily Ottenhoff penalty kick that lifted Calvin to a thrilling 3-2 victory.
“I’m just the designated PK kicker,” said Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago
Christian HS). “I got to take the PK, but everyone else was doing all the work.”
Ottenhoff’s goal was her fourth of the season, as she now leads all Knights in
scoring (9 points).
The afternoon began in Ohio Northern’s favor when Erin Stapp converted on a
one-on-one opportunity against Calvin goalkeeper Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin
Christian HS) – it was just 3:35 into the first half.
But the Knights responded less than four minutes later after Carly Prins
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) ripped a shot that deflected off the gloves of
Polar Bears’ keeper Kristen Dewees and straight to the feet of Elizabeth
Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew HS), who connected on her second goal
of the season to knot the score at 1-1.
Prins gave Calvin a brief 2-1 lead in the second half, sending a near-side
20-foot line drive past Dewees with 21:53 remaining with sophomore Elaine
Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) drawing an assist on the play.
At the 80:41 mark, Ohio Northern’s Chelsea Albert headed a free kick from
Kaitlin Sanders into the back of the net, tying the score at 2-2 after a
stagnant stretch near the grandstands sideline due to deep, cumbersome puddles.
“It was very, very challenging,” said Kellie Honderd (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian HS) of the field conditions. “The ball did not always go where we
wanted and we had to fight through it.”
Minutes later, Schnabel was taken down in the Polar Bears’ goal box, which led
to Ottenhoff’s game-winning strike.
“We finally got disciplined on the offensive end this weekend,” said Ottenhoff.
“Coach (Mark Recker) stressed that we needed to be disciplined on our set plays
and execute them well. I think it’s something we’re still trying to tighten up,
but we’re getting better.”
The Knights (4-1-1) will conclude their five-game, non-conference home stand
against No. 1 Wheaton – the NCAA-III defending champions – on Wednesday, Sep.
17 at Zuidema Field.
WOMEN’S GOLF
MARSHALL – Calvin’s weekend plans golf plans were washed away as the Olivet
Invitational was rained out Friday and Saturday. The 36-hole tournament was
scheduled to be held at the Medalist Golf Club buwere washed away by rain.
Calvin is set to return to action next Saturday, competing at an MIAA outing
hosted by Trine University at the Zollner Golf Club at 1:00 p.m.
