CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 12, 2008
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Farmingdale State 0
GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin rolled to a 5-0 victory over visiting Farmingdale State
College (NY) on a rain-soaked Zuidema Field Friday afternoon.
Calvin struggled to find a rhythmn in the first half before breaking loose for
a pair of goals inside the final 10 minutes of the opening period. Sophomore
Kellie Honderd (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) got things going with a shot
from the left wing after receiving a lead pass from sophomore Stephanie Malburg
(Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS). Honderd then set up senior Michelle
Koele (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) for a goal with just over three minutes
left in the half, allowing the Knights to a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Honderd struck again nine minutes into the second half, beating a defender and
then deking Farmingdale State goalkeeper with a well-crafted finish, marking
her third goal of the year. Moments later, sophomore Mindy Capisciolto
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) scored off a free from senior Elizabeth
Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew HS).
With time ticking down, Ribbens set up senior Liz VanRees (Muskegon/Western
Michigan Christian HS) for a shot from the right wing that VanRees blasted into
the top shelf for her first goal of the year.
Ranked 16th in the most recent Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin (3-1-1
overall) outshot Farmingdale State (2-4-0) 28-1 with junior goalkeepers Alyssa
Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian HS) and Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles,
MO/Whitfield HS) combining on the shutout.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the Polar Bears of Ohio
Northern at 2:00 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
