Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award;
Calvin Scholar-Athletes Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll;
Calvin Ice Hockey Players Receive ACHA Academic Honors

MIAA TEAM GPA HONORS

Nine Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for
the recently completed 2007-08 academic year. The award, presented by the
Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes
conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on
a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2007-08 academic year.

Calvin teams that earned the award for the 2007-08 academic year include the
women's cross country team, the women’s track and field team, the men’s and
women’s tennis teams, the women’s basketball team, the women’s softball
team, the women’s golf team, the women’s swimming and diving team and the
women’s volleyball team. The total of nine teams matches the highest
single-season total in school history as Calvin also had nine of its teams earn
the award for the 2004-05 academic year. It also marks second time that eight
of Calvin’s nine women’s athletics team earned the award.

This is the 10th year the award has been presented. Calvin had nine of the 49
MIAA teams that earned the award.

Of special note, the Calvin women’s cross country team earned the award for
the 10th consecutive year, joining the Adrian women’s track and field, Albion
women’s tennis and Hope women’s cross country team as one of four squads
that have received the award all 10 years of its existence.

Calvin’s highest ranking team in terms of cumulative grade point average was
its women’s tennis team. Led by head coach Jerry Bergsma, the women’s
tennis team posted a 3.595 grade point average to rank third among the list of
MIAA teams so honored. Albion had the top two teams in the MIAA rankings with
its women’s tennis team leading the way with a 3.667 grade point average and
its women’s cross country team second at 3.635. The Calvin women’s cross
country team led by head coach Brian Diemer, finished close behind in fourth
place in the MIAA rankings with a 3.567 grade point average.

Bergsma had both of his teams receive the honor as his women’s golf team
achieved the award for the second time, posting a 3.472 grade point average.

John Ross also had both his women’s basketball and men’s tennis teams on
the list once again as the men’s tennis team picked up the award for the
fourth straight year, posting a 3.402 grade point average while the women’s
basketball team took the honor for the fourth straight year and for the fifth
time overall, collecting a team grade point average of 3.333.

Under the direction of head coach Emily Bustrum, the women’s softball team
picked up the award for the third straight year, posting a 3.418 grade point
average. Led by head coach Dan Gelderloos, the women’s swimming and diving
team also picked up the honor for the third time in four years, accumulating a
grade point average of 3.328.

Led by head coach Jong-il Kim, the women’s track and field team picked up
the award for the fourth straight year and for the seventh time overall,
posting a grade point average of 3.429.

In addition, the women’s volleyball team led by head coach Amber Warners
picked up the award for the sixth time, recording a team grade point average of
3.392.

MIAA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL ANNOUNCED
  
The 2007-08 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic
Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 136 Calvin
scholar-athletes have been named to the list.

The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5
grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2007-08 academic year. A
student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA
Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA
member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.

This year's Honor Roll includes 54 students who achieved the
distinction four consecutive years. Of the 54 students, 10 are from Calvin.

The 10 Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a
fourth straight year are seniors Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT/track and field),David
Dornbos (Kentwood, Mich./track and field), Michael Goorhouse (Holland,
Mich./tennis), Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH, ON/volleyball), Jon Gries (King of
Prussia, PA/cross country & track and field), Lynn Marsh (North Vernon,
IN/cross country & track and field), Richard Tilton (Gap, Pa./tennis), Sarah
Weller (Grandville, Mich./track and field), Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids,
Mich./track and field) and Wendy Zigterman (Western Springs, IL/basketball).

CALVIN HOCKEY PLAYERS RECEIVE ACADEMIC HONORS

Three members of Calvin’s ACHA Division III ice hockey team have been named
to the ACHA Division III All-Academic North Region team. Named to the team from
Calvin are John Singleton, J.D. Lussier and Nicholas Robinson.

A native of Highlands, Ranch, Colorado, Singleton was recently graduated from
Calvin with a double major of economics and political science. Lussier hails
from Sherbrooke, Quebec. He graduated from Calvin this past May with a major of
elementary education and a double minor of Spanish and language arts.

Scheduled to be a senior this fall, Robinson hails from Macomb. He is majoring
in business communications and carries a sports administration minor.

Under the direction of head coach Mike Petrusma, the Calvin ice hockey team
posted an overall record of 17-17 this past year and earned a bid to the ACHA
Division III Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. At the ACHA Division
III Tournament, Calvin finished in 12th place.
