KATIE CORNER TAKES 9th IN DISCUS AT U.S.OLYMPIC TRACK AND FIELD TRIALS
EUGENE, OR -- Katie Corner, a 2004 graduate of Calvin College, concluded competition at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials this weekend with a ninth place finish in the discus. The ninth place finish was an improvement of two spots from her 11th place finish in the Friday prelims. It also marks the highest finish by a Calvin track and field athlete or alumn at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials.
In the discus finals, Corner's top throw was 175-6. She also had throws of 174-3 and 174-6. Her top throw in Friday's prelims had been 174-4.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School, Corner was making her first-ever appearance at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. The trials are currently being held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Aretha Thurmond captured the discus title with a throw of 213-11 and clinched one of three spots for the U.S. Olympic team scheduled to compete in Beijing, China. The other two qualifying spots went to Suzy Powell-Roos and Stephanie Brown Trafton with Powell-Roos taking second (206-5) and Brown Trafton third (205-6).

Scheduled to compete in the Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials this upcoming week in the women's discus and women's hammer throws is 2007 Calvin College graduate Megann VanderVliet. The Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials are scheduled to be held in Windsor, Ontario, with the University of Windsor serving as host.
