Sarah Wittingen Named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American
Calvin College senior Sarah Wittingen has been named a First Team ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-American ® in the women's cross country/track and field
(college) division.
The college division of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program ®)
includes NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. The Academic All-District and
All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director's
Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, an individual
must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20.
Wittingen is receiving ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors for the
second straight year as she was a second team selection last year.
An accounting major at Calvin, Wittingen carries a 3.96 grade point average.
This past spring, she was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner for the third
consecutive year and was named to the All-MIAA first team for the fourth
straight year.
At the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she was a part of three
All-America performances including a national championship effort in the 400
meter hurdles. She also placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles and ran the
leadoff leg on Calvin's fifth place 4x400 meter relay team.
A two-time Great Lakes Regional Runner of the Year recipient, Wittingen
concluded her outdoor track and field career at Calvin as a 10-time NCAA III
All-American. Wittingen is the Calvin record holder in the 400 meter hurdles
(59.36) and 100 meter hurdles (14.28).
A graduate of East Grand Rapids High School, Wittingen was selected to the
MIAA Academic Honor Roll from 2005-to-2007 and has qualified for the honor
again this year. In addition, she has been a member of the U.S. Track and Field
and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team from 2005-07and has
qualified for the honor this year as well.
Calvin has now had its athletes receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America
accolades 77 times including 51 times in the last 11 years. Wittingen is one of
three Calvin athletes to receive Academic All-America accolades for the 2007-08
academic year as Ricky Tilton was a third team selection in men's tennis and
Cara VanWoerkom a second team choice in women's swimming.
