Calvin Grads Prepare To Compete in US/Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials

A pair of Calvin College graduates will compete in Olympic Track and Field Trials during the next two weeks. Katie Corner, a 2004 Calvin graduate, will compete in the discus at the upcoming U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Meanwhile, 2007 Calvin graduate Megann VanderVliet will compete in the upcoming Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials in Windsor, Ontario.

Currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Corner is seeded 13th in the discus with a throw of 187-9. The discus trials are schedule to begin next Friday. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School, Corner was a four-time NCAA III All-American in the throws at Calvin including a three-time All-American in the discus. She was the national runner-up in the discus at both the 2003 and 2004 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer in 2003 and was named Calvin's recipient of the Kay Tiemersma Award in 2004.

Currently residing in Kamloops, British Columbia, VanderVliet will compete in the hammer throw at the Canadian Trials where she is seeded fourth. The Canadian Olympic Trials are slated for July 3-6 at the University of Windsor.

VanderVliet has been training under the guidance of former Soviet Union Olympic thrower Dr. Anatoly Bondurchuk. A highlight video of VanderVliet and her teammates can be found on-line at:

A year ago, VanderVliet competed at the Canadian National Championships for the first time in July 2007 where she finished 4th in the discus.

At Calvin, VanderVliet was a four-time NCAA III All-American, earning the award three times in the shot put and once in the discus. Her top performance was a fourth place finish in the discus at the 2007 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In 2007, she was named the MIAA's Most Oustanding Field Event Performer.

VanderVliet hails from Oakville, Ontario. She is a graduate of Oakville Trafalger High School.
