Calvin Men's and Women's Tennis Players Receive All-MIAA Honors;
Tilton Receives Lawrence Green Scholarship Award and Named Co-Recipient of
Stowe Sportsmanship Award

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TENNIS

Three members of the Calvin men’s tennis team have received All-MIAA honors
while three members of the Calvin women’s tennis team have also been so
honored.

On the men’s side, senior Ricky Tilton has been named to the All-MIAA first
team for the third straight year while junior Marcus Zeilstra has been so
honored for the second straight year. In addition, junior Steve DeMaagd has
been named to the All-MIAA second team.

Tilton is from Gap, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Lancaster Christian High
School. Tilton played at No. 1 singles this spring and crafted an overall
singles mark of 10-3. In doubles play, he was 12-4. Zeilstra is from Oak Brook,
Illinois. He is a graduate of Timothy Christian High School. Zeilstra was 15-3
at No. 2 singles this spring and compiled a doubles mark of 15-5, playing
primarily at No. 1 doubles.

DeMaagd is from Grandville and is a graduate of Calvin Christian High School.
He was 11-7 this spring while playing at No. 3 singles. DeMaagd was 14-4 in
doubles play, playing primarily at No. 1 doubles with Zeilstra.

Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Calvin men’s tennis team
finished the 2008 season with an overall mark of 14-6 as well as a second place
finish in the final MIAA standings.

On the women’s side, freshman Melissa Oosterhouse has been named to the
All-MIAA first team while sophomore Elisabeth Geenen and freshman Kaitlin
Spoelhof have both been named to the All-MIAA second team.

Oosterhouse is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian
High School. She was 18-5 this spring while playing at No. 1 singles. She was
also 14-10 at No. 1 doubles.

Geenen is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the second straight year.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Geenen was
19-4 at No. 3 singles this spring and 14-8 in doubles. Like Geenen, Spoelhof is
a native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School. She was
14-8 in singles play this spring while playing at No. 2 doubles. She was also
15-8 in doubles play.

Under the direction of head coach Jerry Bergsma, the Calvin women’s tennis
team finished the 2008 season with an overall mark of 18-6, setting a Calvin
single-season record for victories in a season. The Knights also finished
second in the final MIAA standings, compiling a 7-1 mark in the dual match
season and then finishing second at the recent MIAA Tournament.

RICKY TILTON RECEIVES STOWE MEMORIAL AWARD/LAWRENCE GREEN SCHOLAR AWARD

Calvin College senior Ricky Tilton has been named the recipient of the
MIAA’s top two men’s tennis honors. A native of Gap, Pennsylvania, Tilton
has been named the recipient of the MIAA’s Lawrence Green Scholar-Athlete
Award and the co-recipient of the MIAA’s Stowe Memorial Award along with Tim
Hubbard of Kalamazoo College.

Tilton is the first Calvin player to receive the Lawrence Green
Scholar-Athlete award since Jon VanderAark in 1997 and the first Calvin player
to receive the Stowe Memorial Award since Dave Meester was so honored in 1998.

The Lawrence Green Scholar-Athlete Award is presented each year at the
conclusion of the conference tournament. The award is a scholar-athlete award
named in memory of Dr. Lawrence Green, longtime tennis coach at Hope College.
To receive the award, an individual must be a senior and at least a two-year
letterwinner. A double major in Spanish and biochemistry, Tilton carries a 3.95
grade point average at Calvin.

The Stowe Memorial Awrd is named in memory of Dr. allen B. Stowe, longtime
professor and tennis coach at Kalamazoo College. Criteria for the award include
contributions to the team by an individual, leadership qualities exhibited and
exemplification of ethic virtues and sportsmanship.

Over the course of his career, Tilton compiled a singles record of 60-26 and a
doubles mark of 46-17.
