CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR April 29, 2008
Baseball Team Falls to Aquinas At Fifth Third Ballpark
BASEBALL
Aquinas 5, Calvin 3
COMSTOCK PARK -- Aquinas stretched its winning streak to six games over Calvin with a 5-3 victory over the Knights at Fifth Third Ballpark Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday's game marked the second meeting between the two teams at the facility - home of the Single A West Michigan Whitecaps. Aquinas won the first meeting 10-8 back in 2004.
Aquinas (20-29) used three Calvin errors to take a 4-0 lead early on as the Saints scored once in the first, twice in the second and once in the fourth. Two of the runs were unearned.
Meanwhile Aquinas starting pitcher Michael Giddings was stellar on the mound, retiring 18 consecutive Calvin batters until junior Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) led off the eighth with a single to right and then moved to third on a double by senior Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN). Senior Brad Brummel (South Christian HS) then delivered a clutch pinch-hit RBI single to score Blacklidge and senior Pieter Groot (Uxbridge, MA) followed with a single to right that scored Marcus. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Drew Johnson (Boise, ID), Brummel was brought home on a sacrifice fly by junior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA).
Calvin (23-8) was unable to score again however and Aquinas added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning and then retired Calvin in order in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
Senior Scott Larsen (Hastings HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 1-2 on the year. Sophomore Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also tossed one inning of relief for the Knights.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 2:00 p.m. in a conference doubleheader at Calvin Field.
