Calvin Hillsdale Gina Relays Recap

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

HILLSDALE --- Junior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) highlighted a weekend of Calvin performances at the Hillsdale Gina Relays on Saturday, winning the 800 meters with a school record and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 2:10.22. The time eclipsed the previous Calvin record time of 2:10.31 turned in by Camille Medema in 2006. Bergstrom also ran a leg on Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that clocked in with a first place and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:50.66. Junior Kristen VanSickel (Pittsburgh, PA) led off the relay followed by Bergstrom, sophomore Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and senior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS).

In the 400 meters, Koning led a trio of Calvin runners that clocked sub-minute performances with Koning coming in at 57.64, VanSickel in 58.50 and freshman Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ) in 59.61.

On Friday night, Wittingen won the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 1:01.04. Also coming in with a season-best time in the 400 meter hurdles was junior Brooke Robertson (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) with a time of 1:07.27. Freshman Stephanie Malburg (Forest Hills Northern HS) also turned in a seson-best time of 1:09.27 in the event.

In the 10,000 meters, senior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) turned in an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 36:36.42. Sophomore Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 37:30.04 in the event. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) had a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 11:02.90. Junior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) also had a provisional qualifying time of 11:08.60.

In the javelin, freshman Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ) had a season-best throw of 119-5. In addition to Bergstrom's school record time in the 800 meters, freshman Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also clocked a season-best time of 2:17.57 in the race.

On the men's side, received a season-best time of 9:31.08 by sophomore George Visser (Chicago, IL) that was good for second place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Zach VanderLaan (Holt Central Lutheran HS) had a season-best time of 57.40 in the 400 meter hurdles. In the 10,000 meters, senior Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA) had a season-best time of 32:11.93 that was good for fourth place.

In the 110 high hurdles, sophomore Caleb Rottman (Fargo, ND) had a season-best time of 15.67. Freshman Joel Klingenberg () also had a solid throw of 168-4 in the javelin. In the 400 meters, senior Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) just missed a season-best time of 400 meters, placing third with a time of 48.26 while senior teammate Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a season-best time of 49.57 in the race.

Finally, in the 4x400 meter relay, the Calvin quartet of VanderLaan, junior Brad Stroner (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS), Baker and Cok turned in a season-best time of 3:17.73 that was good for fourth place.
