Baseball Winning Streak Snapped By William Paterson;
Softball Drops Two In Tucson
Hockey Team Splits Game at National Tournament
BASEBALL
William Paterson 22, Calvin 8
PHOENIX, AZ -- Calvin's spring trip finale ended in defeat as the Knights suffered a 22-8 defeat to William Paterson College on Friday afternoon. Despite the loss, Calvin closes out its spring trip with an impressive 8-1 record, marking Calvin's first winning record in spring break play since the 2002 season when the Knights went 7-3 while down in Florida.
William Paterson jumped on Calvin early, scoring six runs in the top of the first, one in the second and six more in the to pof the third to build a commanding 13-3 lead. Calvin finished the game with 11 hits but William Paterson came up with 24 hits including a pair of home runs.
Senior Todd LaForest (Clio) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year. Calvin was led at the plate by junior Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) who was 3-for-5 with a run scored while senior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) and sophomore Drew Johnson (Boise, ID) had two hits apiece.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action next Wednesday against Aquinas College in a game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Wyoming's Kimble Stadium.
SOFTBALL
Robert Morris 4, Calvin 1
Cornerstone 7, Calvin 2
TUCSON, AZ -- Calvin closed out its spring break trip with a pair of losses, falling 4-1 to Robert Morris College and 7-2 to Cornerstone University. In the contest against Robert Morris, Calvin collected eight hits with junior Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) and freshman Jacqueline Kirkman (Oregon, OH) collecting two hits apiece. Junior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
In the loss to Cornerstone, Calvin took a 2-0 lead on a two-run RBI single by freshman Michelle Vandenberg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) but the Golden Eagles rallied with seven unanswered runs. Calvin finished the game with just three hits. Junior Jenn VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had Calvin's lone extra-base hit with a double.
Calvin is now 4-8 on the year and is scheduled to return to action on March 29 when it travels to Saint Mary's for a conference doubleheader slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
ICE HOCKEY
ROCHESTER, MN -- The Calvin club ice hockey team is 1-2 in tournament play at the ACHA Division III Tournament. On Thursday, Calvin defeated Florida Gulf Coast 7-4. On Friday, Calvin suffered a 6-2 defeat to Northwood. Both games were part of the tournament's consolation bracket.
Calvin is schedule to take on Saginaw Valley State University in its tournament finale on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Knights are currently 17-16 on the year.
In the win over Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, Calvin received three goals from Clay VerKaik and single goals from Bart Tocci, Caleb Barthel, Emery Lovse and Jeff DeKorne. John Singleton had 32 saves in nets for the Knights.
In Friday's loss to Northwood, Calvin fell behind 3-0 but cut the gap to 3-1 with a second period goal. Northwood scored in the final four seconds of the second period however and added two more goals in the third period to keep the game out of reach. Verkaik and Eric Baker had goals for Calvin in defeat. Ben Brandsen, Lovse and Lucas Huyser-Wierenga had assists for the Knights.
Chris Pasma and Singleton split time in goal for Calvin with Pasma collecting eight saves and Singleton 20 saves.
