NCAA III WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (Day Three Prelims) Report

OXFORD, OH -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team qualified three individuals and one relay for Saturday night competition on day three of the NCAA III Women's Swimming and Diving championships.

Competing in championship finals on Saturday night will be sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) in the 200 breaststroke and junior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) on the three-meter diving board. Junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) will compete in the consolation finals of the 100 freestyle and will join senior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL), junior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and senior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) in the consolation finals of the 400 freestyle relay.

Vail provided the most dramatic moments for Calvin in the morning prelims. Seeded 12th in the 200 breaststroke, Vail came up with a career-best time of 2:22.88 that left her tied for the eighth and final spot for the championship finals, forcing a swim off between Vail and Norsworthy of Colby College. Vail proceeded to win the swim off with a school record time of 2:22.44, breaking the previous of 2:22.94 set by Alex Wilson in 2007.

In the 100 freestyle, VanWoerkom came up with a career-best time of 52.70 to grabe the 16th (and final) spot for the consolation finals this evening. Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team then placed 13th with a time of 3:34.60 to advance to the consolation finals tonight.

In the second set of diving prelims, held Saturday afternoon, Deur moved up from sixth and into fourth place with a score of 459.55 points. Heading into Saturday's championship finals, Deur sits just four points out of first place with her voluntary dive score (195.75) that will carry over into tonight's championship finals.

Calvin is currently in eighth place in the team standings with 104 points.
