NCAA III WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS (DAY TWO FINAL) REPORT
OXFORD, OH -- With one day of competition left, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team sits in eighth place at the NCAA III Championships at the University of Miami of Ohio.
Calvin used four honorable mention All-America performances to build its team total to 104 points, one point behind seventh place DePauw and three points ahead of ninth place Middlebury.
Defending national champion Kenyon holds a commanding lead for first place with 389.5 points with Amherst second with 255 points.
Calvin's first honorable mention All-America performance came from its 200 medley relay team of senior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI), sophomore Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL), junior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) that placed ninth with a season-best and school record time of 1:47.80, breaking the previous record of 1:47.88 established a year ago.
Calvin's next point scoring performance came from senior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) in the 200 freestyle with Duncan placing 15th with a time of 1:54.90. Roberts then took 11th in th 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.11.
Calvin capped off the evening with an 10th place finish in the 800 freestyle relay as the Calvin quartet of Duncan, freshman Kendra Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN), sophomore Laura Price (Warren, PA) and VanWoerkom clocked in with a time of 7:45.26.
Junior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) also moved into the next round of competition of the three-meter diving competition on Saturday. Deur currently sits in sixth place and will compete in a second round of prelims on Saturday afternoon. She will compete in Saturday's finals if she remains in the top eight after Saturday's prelims.
"We had a very solid day," said Calvin women's swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We were hoping for a little more in the prelims but we came back very strong in the evening. Our goal is to finish in the top 10 in the final team standings and right now we're in position to reach that goal."
