NCAA III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships (Day Two Prelims) Report;

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

OXFORD, OH -- The Calvin women's swim team advanced two individuals and a relay into the consolation finals during the prelims of day two of the NCAA III Championships at the University of Miami of Ohio. Advancing into the consolation finals with morning prelim swims were sophomore Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL) in the 100 breaststroke and senior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) in the 200 freestyle while Calvin's 200 medley relay team of senior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI), Roberts, junior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) also moved on to the consolation finals.

Seeded 15th heading into the prelims, Calvin's 200 medley relay posted the ninth-best time of the morning, clocking in with a time of 1:48.18, missing a spot in the championship finals by two-hundreths of a second. The time was also a season-best with the relay dropping nearly a full second from its seed time.

Roberts placed 10th in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.00 while Duncan took 16th in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:54.52.

Also competing for Calvin on Friday morning was sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) who placed 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.09) and sophomore Laura Price (Warren, PA) who placed 28th in the 200 freestyle (1:56.81).

Also scheduled to compete later this evening is Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of Duncan, VanWoerkom, Price and freshman Kendra Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN). The relay is seeded seventh with a time of 7:42.63.

BASEBALL

PHOENIX, AZ -- Calvin improved to 8-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Dickinson College (PA) late Thursday afternoon at the Russ Maat Invitational. Calvin took the opener 16-4 and the nightcap 8-4.

In game one, junior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) was credited with the pitching victory as he scattered nine hits over five innings of work. Pocock (2-0) was relieved by sophomore Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who went the final two innings. Calvin's offensive attack continued to ignite as the Knights collected 19 hits including three apiece from seniors Pieter Groot (Uxbridge, MA) and Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN), junior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Kyle Gurzyinski (Ludington HS). Fletcher had a pair of doubles and three runs batted in while Schepel drove in four runs.

In game two, junior Kyle Cousins tossed a complete-game victory to run his season record to 2-0. Cousins allowed only four hits and two earned runs while striking out two and walking two.

Calvin trailed 3-2 through three innings but used three runs in the bottom of the fourth and and three more in the bottom of the sixth to close out the win. Fletcher had two hits and Groot three hits. Junior Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) also had a run scoring double.

Calvin returns to action today when it faces William Paterson (NJ) in the final game of its spring trip.

SOFTBALL

TUCSON, AZ -- Calvin moved to 4-6 on the season by splitting a pair of games on Thursday in Arizona. Calvin opened the day with a 9-7 win over Iowa Wesleyan College and then fell to Missouri Valley College 14-10 later on.

In the win over Iowa Wesleyan, Calvin used a five-run third inning to take control of the game. Iowa Wesleyan rallied with five runs of its own in the top of the seventh, nearly erasing a 9-2 Calvin lead but the Knights were able to extinguish the threat.

Junior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up the win for the Knights . Sophomore Amanda Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS), junior Birtany Moriarity (Muskegon Monsa Shores HS) and senior Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) had two hits apiece. Junior Jen VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a double.

In the loss to Missouri Valley College, Calvin fell behind 11-3 before mounting a strong comeback effort. Folkerts (3-6) took the loss for the Knights with Johnson tossing four innings of relief. Calvin closed the deficit down to two runs at 12-10 late but Missouri Valley was able to score two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to keep the Knights at bay.

VandenAkker had a big game in defeat, going 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI's. Senior Sam Ehlert (Rockford HS) had a pair of hits while junior Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) scored three runs and drove in two. Freshman Jacqueline Kirkman (Oregon, OH) also had a pair of hits for the Knights.

Calvin closes out its spring break trip today when it faces Robert Morris and Cornerstone.

MEN'S TENNIS

ORLANDO, FL -- Calvin completed its spring trip to Florida with a 9-0 win over Ramapo College Thursday afternoon. The Knights are now 4-1 on the year and return to action next Thursday when they face cross-town rival Aquinas in a key non-conference match.

ORLANDO, FL -- Calvin improved to 6-1 on the year with an 8-1 victory over Haverford College (PA) Thursday afternoon, completing its spring swing through Florida with a 4-1 record.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Alma at 3:00 p.m. in its conference opener.
