CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 13, 2008
NCAA III WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY ONE FINAL REPORT
MIAMI, OH -- Calvin used three All-America performances and one honorable mention effort to build a seventh place total of 64 points through one day of competition at the NCAA III Championships at the University of Miami of Ohio.
With its point total, Calvin sits just seven points out of fifth place and just eight points out of fourth place. Defending national champion Kenyon leads the field with 205 points.
Junior diver Erica Deur of Holland Christian High School posted the fifth All-America berth of her career on Thursday night, taking fourth on the one-meter board with a score of 435.30 points. Deur entered the meet as the defending national champion in the event.
"Erica had a very solid performance," said Calvin women's swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "Everything didn't quite go her way for a national title but she dove well and helped our team get off to a very strong start."
Calvin also posted All-America performances in both the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays on Thursday night. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS), sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS), junior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and senior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) took eighth 1:37.11, shaving six-tenths of a second off its morning prelim time.
Calvin's 400 medley relay team of sophomore Laura Price (Warren, PA), sophomore Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL), Wolfe and VanWoerkom took seventh with a time of 3:57.15 as the team moved up one place from its morning prelim seed.
In addition, VanWoerkom netted an honorable mention All-America berth in the 50 freestyle, placing 14th with a time of 24.22.
"I'm really happy with the way we opened the meet," said Gelderloos. "The big key is that we swam very well in the morning to advance to the evening events. You have to make things happen in the prelims before you can make things happen in the finals and we did a very good job of following that formula today."
Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Friday are VanWoerkom, Price and senior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) in the 200 freestyle and Roberts and Vail in the 100 breaststroke. Calvin will also have a 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay competing. Its 200 medley relay is seeded 15th while its 800 freestyle relay is seeded seventh.
