Women's Swimming and Diving Off To Strong Start At NCAA III Championships

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

MIAMI, OH -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team is off to a strong start as the Knights qualified two relays for tonight's championship finals and qualified another individual for the consolation finals.

In the 50 freestyle, junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) qualified for the consolation finals with a career-best time of 24.01. VanWoerkom's time was good for 10th place out of the morning prelims. VanWoerkom came into the race seeded 23rd with a time of 24.19.

VanWoerkom also led off Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that qualified for tonight's championship finals with a time of 1:37.17. The time was good for eighth place out of the prelims, landing a Calvin 200 freestyle relay team into the championship finals for the third consecutive year. VanWoerkom was joined on the relay by sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS), junior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and senior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI).

Calvin's 400 medley relay team of sophomore Laura Price (Warren, PA), sophomore Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL), Wolfe and VanWoerkom with a season-best time of 3:55.83. The Calvin 400 medley relay team entered the prelims seeded 14th.

Also competing but not qualifying for the evening consolation or championship finals on Thursday were Vail and Roberts in the 200 IM and senior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) in the 500 freestyle. Vail placed 23rd in the 200 IM with a career-best time of 2:10.06 while Roberts just missed a personal best in the event, finishing 27th with a time of 2:10.40. In the 500 freestyle, Duncan had a career-best time of 5:08.97 that was an improvement of nearly four seconds from her seed time. Duncan finished 31st in the morning prelims.

Currently competing this afternoon in the prelims of the one-meter diving competition is Calvin junior Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS). Deur is the defending national champion in the event.
