Hockey Team Drops Opener at ACHA Division III Nationals;
Baseball Team Stretches Win Streak to Six;
Softball Team Splits Games on Tuesday and Wednesday

MEN'S CLUB ICE HOCKEY

ROCHESTER, MN -- The Calvin men's ice hockey team dropped its opening game at the ACHA Division III Tournament against top-seeded Northern Colorado on Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-0. Neither team scored through the first two periods but Northern Colorado was able to break through for three goals in the final period of play. Northern Colorado outshot Calvin 36-25. Goaltender John Singelton had 33 saves for the Knights.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it faces Farmingdale State in a consolation round game at 1:00 p.m.

PHOENIX, AZ -- The Calvin baseball team is off to a blazing start to the 2008 season. On Wednesday, the Knights raised their season record to 6-0 with an 18-5 victory over Webster University (MO). Calvin received a stellar pitching effort from freshman righthander Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ). Spoelstra struck out three and walked one in six innings of work. Calvin also collected 18 hits in the win with senior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) and juniors Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) and Jason May (Chicago, IL) all driving in three runs apiece.

On Tuesday, Calvin swept a doubleheader from Presentation College of South Dakota, winning the opener 7-0 and the nightcap 7-3. In the opener, freshman Peter Steiner () and sophomore Chad Epker combined on the shutout win with Steiner allowing only two hits in six innings of work and Epker tossing a scoreless seventh inning frame. Sophomore shortstop Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had the key blow offensively for the Knights with a grand slam homer in the second.

In game two, senior Scott Larsen (Hastings HS) went the distance in picking up the complete game victory. Larsen scattered eight hits over seven innings while the Knights had 12 hits including three from Schepel.

Through six games, Calvin is batting .393 as a team with Schepel leading the way with a .600 batting average. Schepel is currently 12-for-20 on the trip with a slugging percentage of 1.150.

SOFTBALL

TUCSON, AZ -- The Calvin softball team is currently 3-5 on its spring trip to Arizona. On Tuesday, Calvin split a pair of games, defeating Kenyon College 8-6 and falling to Judson University 5-3. On Wednesday, Calvin dropped an 8-6 decision to Webster University but came back to defeat Monmouth College 7-6 behind a seventh inning rally.

In the win over Kenyon on Tuesday, junior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was credited with the pitching victory, striking out two and walking two. Sophomore Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) had a pair of hits and a pair of stolen bases. Junior Brittany Moriarity (Mona Shores HS) provided the power with a two-run homer.

In the loss to Judson, Calvin was victimized by three errors that led to a pair of unearned runs. Sophomore Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year. Senior Sam Ehlert (Rockford HS) and freshman Jacqueline Kirkman (Oregon, OH) had a pair of hits in defeat for the Knights.

Full statistics of Calvin's games on Wednesday were not available late Wednesday night.

Through Tuesday's games, Miller is leading Calvin with a .450 batting average and six stolen bases.

MEN'S TENNIS

ORLANDO, FL -- The Calvin men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories over regionally-ranked opponents on its spring trip to Orlando, Florida, defeating Wheaton College (IL) 5-4 on Tuesday and Vassar College (NY) 5-4 on Wednesday. In both victories, senior Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA) picked up the deciding point, winning at No. 1 singles in both matches.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday, facing Ramapo College at noon. Calvin is currently 3-1 on the season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

ORLANDO, FL -- The Calvin women's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the 2008 season but not without a fight, falling 7-2 to nationally-ranked Coe College Tuesday afternoon. Ranked 29th nationally, Coe (IA) captured five of the six singles points to clinch the win but four of the six singles flights were taken to three sets. Sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) picked up Calvin's lone singles point at No. 4 singles.

Calvin also picked up a point at No. 3 doubles with sophomore Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) and sophomore Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) teaming up for a win.

Earlier in the day, Calvin picked up a 9-0 win over Bryn Mawr College (PA).

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it takes on Haverford College at 11:30 a.m.
