Men's Tennis Picks Up First Victory of the Season

Calvin 12, North Park 9
PHOENIX, AZ -- Calvin improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 12-9 victory over North Park College Monday afternoon at the Russ Maat Invitational. Calvin again broke out the heavy hitting sticks, recording 17 hits two days after a 14-hit attack against Simpson College. Calvin trailed 5-1 against the Vikings but tied the game up with four runs in the top of the fifth with sophomore Drew Johnson belting a two-run RBI single and sophomore Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also collecting an RBI single in the rally. In the top of the sixth, Calvin took a 7-5 lead on a two-run homer by junior Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) but the Vikings answered with two runs in the bottom half to tie the game.
Calvin proceeded to take a 9-7 lead on a two-run homer by Schepel in the top of the seventh and added a run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by junior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) and followed with two more in the ninth with junior Jason May (Chicago, IL) picking up an RBI single in the inning.
Schepel and May finished with three hits apiece while Johnson, junior Jacob Vriesman (Denver, CO), senior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) and Blacklidge all had two hits each.
Freshman Adam VanOpstall (Calvin Christian HS) picked up the win in relief of starter Todd LaForest (Clio) with VanOpstall striking out four and walking one in 3.2 innings of work. LaForest was credited with 5.1 innings of work in his season debut as he scattered seven hits.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it faces Presentational College of South Dakota in a doubleheader slated to begin at noon (PCT).
WOMEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL -- The women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2008 season with a pair of victories on Monday, defeating Ramapo College (NJ) 9-0 and then edging regionally-ranked Connecticut College 5-4 later in the day.
In the win over Connecticut College, ranked 15th in the rugged Northeast region, Calvin secured the victory with a win by freshman Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) at No. 5 singles. Calvin picked up four of its five points in singles play with freshman Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning at No. 1 singles, freshman Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 2 singles, sophomore Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 3 singles and Busscher at No. 5 singles. Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 1 doubles as Oosterhouse and sophomore Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) teamed up for the win.
The win was Calvin's second this year against a regionally-ranked Division III opponent.
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it faces nationally-ranked Coe College of Iowa at 8:00 a.m. and follows with an afternoon match against Bryn Mawr College.
