PHOENIX, AZ -- The Calvin coaching debut for John Sparks was a successful one on Saturday as the Knights swept a doubleheader from Simpson College on Saturday, winning the opener 8-5 and the nightcap 13-2.
In the opener, Calvin rode the strong pitching performance from junior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) as Pocock went six strong innings, striking out 11 of the 27 batters he faced. Calvin broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Freshman Adam VanOpstall (Calvin Christian HS) came on to pitch a scoreless seventh to gain his first collegiate save.
Calvin picked up seven hits in the win with senior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) collecting three RBI's including a two-run RBI triple in the first inning.
In game two, Calvin received a strong pitching performance from junior Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) as the lefthander scattered five hits over six innings of work while striking out four and walking two.
Cousins received plenty of offensive support as Calvin rapped out 14 hits led by senior Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN) who went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI's. Junior Jacob Vriesman (Denver, CO) and freshman Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL/Timothy Christian HS) had two hits apiece. Freshman Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL/Glenbrook South HS) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to help close out the win.
