Baseball Team Opens Season With Doubleheader Sweep;
Track and Field Teams Open Outdoor Season at Hendrix Invitational

PHOENIX, AZ -- The first two games of John Sparks' Calvin coaching career will go down in the books as victories as as the Knights swept a doubleheader from Simpson College (IA) Saturday afternoon, winning by scores of 8-5 and 13-2.

In the opener, junior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) picked up the pitching victory for the Knights. In the nightcap, junior Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) had a strong outing in picking up the pitching victory. Cousins was aided by 15 Calvin hits.

A complete report on the doubleheader will be sent out later this weekend.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

CONWAY, ARKANSAS -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor campaigns on Saturday and both teams had solid performances at the Hendrix Invitational.

On the men's side, junior Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS) had an NCAA III provisional qualifying time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, winning the race with a time of 9:18.24. In the 5,000 meters, junior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) had an NCAA III provisional qualifying and first place time of 14:34.92. Senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) was second in 14:53.01.

On the women's side, junior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) won the steeplechase with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 11:11.41. In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a first place and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 17:31.64. Senior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) followed with a time of 17:56.90 while junior Kelly Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) had a time of 18:26.04.

Junior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) was a double winner for the Knights, winning the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:43.06 and the 800 meters in a time of 2:18.61.

In the 400 meters, sophomore Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took first place with a time of 59.70. Senior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.39.

In the throws, sophomore Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a collegiate best throw of 40.07 meters, breaking the 131 foot mark in the event for the first time as a Calvin thrower.

Both Calvin teams will now train for a week in Gulf Shores, Alabama. They will return to action on March 29 at the Grand Rapids Open at Houseman Field, scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
