Volleyball Cruises to Win over Albion;
X-Country Teams Run Well at Notre Dame
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-14)
ALBION -- Calvin kept its undefeated MIAA record intact with a 30-18, 30-21, 30-14 victory at Albion Friday night, Ranked 15th in the latest AVCA Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin is now 13-3 overall and 8-0 in the MIAA.
Calvin posted an impressive team hitting percentage of .343 while limiting Albion to a .067 attack percentage. Calvin's defensive effort was a balanced effort as its back row accumulated 50 digs while its frontcourt chalked up 16 blocks in the three-game win. Senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) had a superlative all-around effort with 17 digs, 11 kills, two service aces and an attack percentage of .308.
Senior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) was also stellar with nine kills and six blocks while sophomore Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN) had six kills and four blocks. Senior setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) pikced up 29 assists and seven digs while junior Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) had 11 digs. Junior Jessica Garlick (Kalamazoo Christian HS) also contributed seven kills and two blocks.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 6:30 p.m. conference match.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
NOTRE DAME, IN -- The nationally-ranked Calvin men's and women's cross country teams turned in strong performances at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon as the top-ranked men's team took second in the 25-team Gold Division with a team score of 106 points while the second-ranked Calvin women's team took fourth in the 27-team women's Gold Division with a team score of 174 points.
Grand Valley State, ranked fourth in the latest Division II men's poll, won the men's Gold Division with a team score of 93 points. Calvin's top performer in the men's race was junior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) with a fourth place time of 24:57. Nate Peck of Grand Valley won the race with a time of 24:25. Senior Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS) was next for the Knights with a 12th place time of 25:19 followed by junior Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS) in 27th (25:34) and senior Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA) in 28th (25:34). Calvin's fifth man was junior Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL) with a 35th place time of 25:42. Rounding out Calvin's finishers were sophomore Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI) in 77th (26:26), senior Dan VandenAkker (South Christian HS) in 78th (26:26), freshman Jakeniah Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH) in 86th (26:32) and junior Andrew Stutzman (Kutztown, PA) in 166th (27:49).
In the women's race, Grand Valley State, ranked third in the latest Division II Top-25 poll, took first place with a team score of 126 points with Division I Liberty second (147 points), Division I Santa Clara third (164 points) and Calvin fourth (174 points).
Laura Rolf of Valparaiso took first individually with a time of 17:04. Calvin's top two finishers were senior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) and junior Lauren Bergstrom (Century, MN) with Overbeck placing 15th (18:19) and Bergstrom 16th (18:19). Junior Jesi Hale (Rehoboth, NM) just missed a top-25 finish, placing 26th with a time of 18:31. Calvin's next finisher was junior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) in 57th (18:56) and junior Lynn Marsh (North Vernon, IN) in 60th (18:57). Freshman Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was right behind Marsh, finishing 61st in a time of 18:57. Other Calvin finishers included junior Jessi Miller (Colorado Springs, CO) in 82nd (19:08), sophomore Elizabeth Smith (Bothell, WA) in 83rd (19:08) and sophomore Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 125th (19:42).
A group of Calvin cross country runners will also compete on Saturday at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational.
