CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPT. 28, 2007
EMILY BUSTRUM NAMED CALVIN SOFTBALL COACH
GRAND RAPIDS – Emily Bustrum has been named Calvin’s head softball coach.
The 26-year old Bustrum takes over the position from former head coach Deb
Bakker who stepped down from the position to focus on her teaching
responsibilities as a professor in Calvin’s Health, Physical Education,
Recreation, Dance and Sport department.
A 2004 graduate of Cornerstone University, Bustrum has served as the head
varsity softball coach at Northpointe Christian High School since 2004. She has
also been a coach with the Grand Rapids Blaze summer softball program since
2002.
At Cornerstone, Bustrum was a four-year member of the school’s softball team
and was a part of its 2004 team that reached the NAIA World Series.
Prior to coming to Cornerstone, Bustrum was a four-year varsity pitcher on the
Forest Hills Central girls softball team from 1996-to-2000.
Bustrum graduated from Cornerstone with a degree in elementary education. She
currently serves as a physical education teacher at Hamilton Elementary School
in the East Kentwood school system. In addition, she is currently working on
her master’s degree through Western Michigan University.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach at Calvin College,”
said Bustrum. “Calvin is a school with strong Christian beliefs, high
academic achievement and athletic excellence. I’m looking forward to having
an impact on young Christian women at the college level.”
Calvin women’s athletics director Dr. Nancy Meyer is also glad to have
Bustrum on board. “I am very pleased to have Emily Bustrum as our softball
coach,” said Meyer. “She is very energetic and enthusiastic and she has a
strong softball background. I am confident that she will do a great job and I
am looking forward to working with her.”
Although this is her first experience as a collegiate softball coach, Bustrum
is already looking forward to recruiting process. “I am looking forward to
recruiting student-athletes to come to Calvin College,” said Bustrum. “From
academics, athletics and a spiritual emphasis, Calvin offers the complete
package. We also have wonderful new facilities for athletics including a
beautiful softball field.”
Last year’s Calvin team finished 11-19 overall and in sixth place in the
MIAA with a 7-9 conference mark. The Knights do return several letterwinners
from last year’s team. “I know we will be young but I also think that we
have a lot of athletic ability with our returning and incoming players. Our
immediate goal will be to come together and have good chemistry both on and off
the field.”
Calvin is scheduled to open its season in Mid-March on a spring trip to
Arizona. Calvin’s home opener is slated for March 29 when the Knights host
Saint Mary’s in their MIAA opener.
