Calvin topped Hope for the third straight time, winning 3-0 at Zuidema Field
Saturday afternoon. The Knights had already shown they could score with 29
goals on the year and today they put that together with an outstanding
possession game.
“I think this team is starting to believe in each other,” Coach Mark
Recker said. “They are starting to buy into success as a team and not
necessarily as an individual.”
The Knights came out shooting and Michelle Koele (Denver, CO/ Denver
Christian) wasted no time putting Calvin on top 1-0 in just the third minute of
play. Koele dribbled up the field and with a nice step over move, rocketed a
left-footed shot that deflected off the cross bar and into the net.
“It felt awesome,” said Koele whose first goal of the year came in front
of her parents who made the trip from Denver to watch her play.
“Michelle made a decision over the summer that she wanted to be a quality
player for our program,” Recker said. “I give all my credit to her because
that focus has really transformed into a true performance this year.”
Another “true performer” for the Knights this year has been freshman Carly
Prins (Hudsonville/ Unity Christian). Prins had already proved to be a scoring
threat with a team high six goals, but today she proved she can also create
picking up two assists to give her a team high 14 points.
“Carly does a lot in terms of really being able to hold the ball, possess
and distribute which then allows our midfield to be confident sending balls to
our striker lines; so it just kind of builds on itself,” Recker said.
In the 13th minute, Prins fed a cross to former high school teammate Kellie
Honderd (Hudsonville/ Unity Christian) who deflected a shot of the outstretched
hands of Hope goal keeper Kelly Schaefer to put Calvin up 2-0.
Honderd began the year on defense, but moved up to forward against Ferris
State and has started there in three games since.
“She has done some really nice things,” Recker said. “We went to a
different defensive philosophy, more of a marking system so that we could
release Honderd to give us additional support up high.”
Recker also had words of praise for senior stopper-back Leah Scholten
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) who was assigned to bottle up the middle of
Hope’s offensive attack. “Leah Scholten had an outstanding game,” said
Recker. “The stats may not show it but she was a key part of the defensive
shutout. Hope has several dangerous offensive players and she played a big role
in helping keep them off the board.”
Calvin got an insurance goal late in the second half when Prins again put a
ball across the goal mouth, this time finding Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/
Western Michigan Christian), her second goal of the year.
Calvin outshot Hope 15-11 which including a 6-4 advantage on shots on goal.
Calvin was whistled for 21 fouls to Hope’s seven. Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/
Calvin Christian) picked up three saves in the first half and Kayla Sulzer (St.
Charles, MO/ Whitfield) picked up one save in the second half.
Calvin will be in action at DePauw on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
