CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2007

WOMEN'S SOCCER

SOUTH BEND - In an unusual early season non-conference match-up between two MIAA foes, Calvin and St. Mary's ended in a 0-0 tie Wednesday afternoon in Indiana. Both coaches decided not to play an overtime period because the game did not count towards the MIAA standings. The teams will face-off in an MIAA match on October 13 at Calvin.

Calvin improved the team defense on Wednesday after giving up nine goals in two games over the weekend to Chicago and Wheaton. The Knights held the Belles to only one shot on goal the entire game. Sophomore Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO) went the distance in goal for the shut-out, collecting that one save. Calvin had a total of 14 shots, five of which were on goal, but were unable to get a shot past St. Mary's keeper Amy Mahoney, who played the entire game. Senior Leah Scholten (Unity Christian) led the Knights with four shots total, two on goal.

Calvin is now 2-3-1 on the young season while St. Mary's moved to 3-1-1 on the year. The upcoming schedule gives the Knights some time off as the team is not back in action a week from today in another non-conference match against Ferris State University at home. The Knights open their MIAA conference schedule on September 22nd with a home against the Thunder from Tri-State University.
