If there is any drop off from the Knights second straight 30 win season a year
ago, Calvin didn’t show it in tonight’s conference home opener against
Adrian as the Knights easily swept the Bulldogs 30-23, 30-24, 30-24 in an early
battle of conference unbeatens.
Senior Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/ Valley Christian) was huge for the
Knights as she led the team in digs, set assists and blocks. A year ago,
Zondervan was third in the nation in assists per game ratio with 14.13.
Tonight she picked up 42, to up her average to 14.05 per game. She also had
three blocks and 14 digs.
Senior leaders Kristen Kalb (Stow, Ohio/ Stow- Munroe Falls) and Molly Krikke
(Grennwich, OH/ South Central) appeared to be in mid-season form as they led
the Knights with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Freshman Kim Wigboldy
(Scottsdale, AZ/ Valley Christina) also shined for the Knights in her debut at
the Calvin Field house as she was the third Knight with double digit kills at
10.
Calvin also continued its strong team presence at the net as the Knights
amassed ten blocks. Krikke and Zondervan each had three blocks while junior
Jessica Garlick (Portage/ Kalamazoo Christian) and sophomore Sarah Kramer
(Dyer, IN/ Illiana Christian) continued their excellent season blocking with
two blocks apiece. Kramer also had seven kills and led the team in hitting
percentage at .375.
A year ago the Knights swept MIAA regular season play as well as the MIAA
conference tournament. Calvin advances to 5-1 and 2-0 in the MIAA while the
Bulldogs fall to 6-2 and 3-1 in conference.
The Knights will next be in action on Thursday at Tri-State. There is a link
to Tri-State’s broadcast of the game at calvin.edu/sports. This weekend,
Calvin will travel to Wittenberg University to participate in the Wittenberg
