MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin College will play host to two-time U.S. Olympic swimmer Josh Davis next Thursday and Friday. During his swimming career, Davis captured five Olympic medals, winning three gold medals at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and then adding a pair of silver medals at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. Davis won gold medals in 1996 in the 400 and 800 freestyle events as well as a member of the U.S. 400 meter relay team. Davis was the only swimmer at the Atlanta Olympics to win three gold medals. At the 2000 games, Davis earned silver medals in both the 400 and 800 freestyle. He also served as co-captain of the U.S. Olympic Swim team at the 2000 Olympic Games. Davis also broke the American record in the 200 freestyle three teams in 2000.
A graduate of the University of Texas, Davis now travels the country as a motivational faith-based speaker. Davis has been involved with the ministry Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action for many years. At The University of Texas, he served as president of its FCA chapter.
Davis will provide a motivational speech to a group of Calvin athletes Thursday night and will then spent more time on the Calvin campus Friday morning. Davis is also scheduled to give a swimming clinic at East Grand Rapids High School on Saturday.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host Josh Davis on our campus next week," said Calvin men's and women's swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "It will be a wonderful opportunity for Calvin's athletes to hear the life testimony of a world-class athlete. I know the members of our swimming and diving program are anxiously awaiting his arrival. We are all very grateful that Josh has accepted our invitation to visit our campus."
