JIM DETERS UPDATE
KINSTON, NC — 2005 Calvin College graduate Jim Deters continues to pick up
steam for the Kinston Indians. An advanced Class A affiliate of the Cleveland
Indians, the Kinston Indians are a member of the Carolina League and currently
hold the Southern Division lead with a 44-23 record. The Indians have already
clinched the 1st half championship, assuring the team of a spot in the
post-season playoffs.
Deters has been a big part of Kinston's first half success as he recently
picked up his fifth pitching victory of the season and then added his first
save just a few days later.
Heading into a Saturday night contest with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Deters
is 5-2 on the year with a 2.25 earned run average along with one save.
Also a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters picked up his fifth
victory of the year in a game played on June 8 against Myrtle Beach as he
received the start, went five innings and allowed three runs in a 21-6 Kinston
win.
On Wednesday night of this week, Deters came on in relief and tossed a pair of
shutout innings to gain the save in a 1-0 victory over the Lynchburg
Hilltoppers. Deters struck out two and allowed just one hit in two innings of
work.
Among pitchers logging more than 20 innings of work this year, Deters leads
the Kinston pitching staff in earned run average.
Deters has appeared in 17 games for Kinston and has given up 41 hits in 40
innings of work. He has struck out 22 batters and walked just six and has an
impressive WHIP (walks and hits to innings pitched) of 1.18.
