BECKY WEIMA NAMED 1st TEAM ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
For the second consecutive year, Becky Weima has been named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American in the women's at-large college division.
A four-year standout on the Calvin women's tennis team, Weima has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team in the at-large division which includes the sports of swimming, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, water polo and ice hockey.
Weima was named a second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American a year ago. Weima is the third individual from Calvin to receive Academic All-America accolades this year as Lisa Winkle was a first team selection in women's basketball in February and Rafael Siebenschein (men's tennis) was a third team pick in the at-large division earlier this week.
Weima hails from Caledonia and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian HighSchool. A four-year member of the Calvin women's swimming and diving team, Weima was graduated from Calvin last month with a double major of Spanish and secondary education while carrying a 3.71 grade point average.
During her four years at Calvin, Weima captured five individual national titles, winning the 200 yard freestyle three times and the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle once. Her efforts helped Calvin finish 10th at the NCAA III Championships in 2005, sixth in 2006 and fourth in 2007. The three finishes are the top three national team finishes in Calvin swimming and diving history.
A 21-time NCAA III All-American, Weima was also named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Swimmer four consecutive years and was also a four-time All-MIAA selection. In addition, she was named the Division III Swimmer of the Week
three times in her career by Collegeswimming.com. She is the NCAA III record holder in the 200 freestyle (1:49.02), and the MIAA record holder in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events and the Calvin record holder in the 50, 100, 200, 500
and 1,000 freestyle events as well as in the 100 butterfly.
A three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a member of the College Swimming Coaches Association All-Academic Team last summer, Weima was named the recipient of the Detroit Athletic Club's Female College Athlete of the Year award this spring.
Next fall, she will begin teaching at Holland Christian High School and will also serve as the school's head girls swim coach.
