CALVIN FINISHES 8TH IN FINAL SPORTS ACADEMY DIRECTOR'S CUP STANDINGS
For the 12th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final
NCAA III U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings, and now is one of only
seven schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the
competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass.,
Middlebury, Vt., Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the State University of New York at
Cortland and Emory, Ga.
Calvin finished eighth in the nation in Division III in 2006-2007 with a
school record point total of 713 points, finishing less than six points behind
seventh place Wisconsin-LaCrosse.. MIAA rival Hope College was 20th in this
year's standings with 501 points.
Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in
the nation in Division III by winning its 11th U.S. Sports Academy Directors'
Cup with 1,162.50 points.
This year's eighth-place finish also marks the fifth time that Calvin has
finished in the top 10 in the final standings. The school's athletic teams were
ninth overall last year, sixth in 2004-05, sixth in 1999-2000 and seventh in
1998-99.
The Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics (NACDA), United States Sports Academy and USA TODAY to
the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country, and is based on
points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events.
Division III points are awarded based on finish in championship competition.
Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish
worth 90 points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count
for 75 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
In other divisions Grand Valley State was the runaway winner in the Division
II ranks, making it four-in-a-row for the Lakers, and Stanford won its 13th
straight Directors' Cup crown at the NCAA Division I level. Azusa Pacific was
again the the NAIA winner for 2007.

field team was worth 90 points in the Director's Cup standings, with the
men’s tennis team’s finish worth 50.5 points and the men's finish in
track and field worth 47.5 points.
Combined, 10 of Calvin's 17 sports teams during the 2006-07 academic year
scored Directors' Cup points.
After the fall sports season Calvin led the team standings with a total of 323
